  7. Friendly feud over 'T'owd man' originpublished at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 29 March 2019

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

A dispute has erupted between two areas of Derbyshire, over who lays claim to foot-high stone carving.

T'owd Man, which depicts a lead miner with a pick-axe and a basket in his hand, is synonymous with Wirksworth's St Mary's Church, after the carving was discovered on the building during a refurbishment in the 1870s.

    T'owd man

His image has been printed on tea towels and tote bags in the town, but the village of Bonsall, just down the road, has said it too has a claim to T'owd Man.

The same carving was found at the village's 13th Century St James' Church during a makeover in 1863.

    T'owd man

BBC Radio Derby reporter Wesley Mallin said: "Bonsall is fighting back, planning a T'owd Man walk and publicising his history as a lead mining icon.

"All they ask is that when you see him, you think of the village up the road and call him by his proper name - T'owd Man of Bonsall."
