    Derby County and Leeds United fans have been warned not to fight, external at tomorrow's play-off semi-final at Pride Park.

    A capacity crowd is expected for the crunch game between two sides with a long-running rivalry.

    CCTV, body-worn cameras and drones will all be deployed as police attempt to stop clashes between opposing fans.

    Ch Insp Richard Lambert, of Derbyshire Police, said: “Should instances of disorder occur before, during or after the game they will be dealt with quickly and effectively - even if arrests aren’t made there and then."

    Parents of pupils at 13 Leicestershire schools have been sent letters warning about the financial struggles being faced by the academy trust they are run by.

    Paul Stone, chief executive of Discover Schools Academy Trust, wrote to parents of more than 4,000 pupils explaining it would face "tough choices and difficult decisions" over the next few years.

    He said "additional costs" from rising national insurance and pension contributions, the national living wage and staff pay rises were putting extra pressure on budgets.

    The trust runs several primary schools across the county, including in Sileby, Melton Mowbray, Leicester and Enderby.

    Mr Stone said: "We want to be open and honest with parents. It's not political, it's not blaming any particular thing, it's just us saying, this is the situation, these are the challenges we face and this is what we're doing about it.

    "The response from parents so far has been really positive. They are grateful of the honest approach and a few have said that they can help and offer some support."

    In his letter, Mr Stone asked parents to consider, among other things, using the academy's after school clubs ahead of outside providers; volunteering time to support activities; sharing "positive news about the school" to encourage future pupil numbers; and paying voluntary contributions towards school trips.

    If you’ve been in Nottingham lately, you may have noticed the shroud of scaffolding around the castle. It’s undergoing a multimillion-pound transformation, and I’ve been given an exclusive look behind the scenes.

    The old galleries have been stripped back to the brickwork, and through the tunnel, a brand new exhibition space is being created, which will retell the story of Robin Hood and Nottingham’s rebellious past.

    Ted Cantle, chairman of the Nottingham Castle Trust, said: “This will be a world class attraction when it’s finished. We’ll have a major marketing campaign right across the country, and we hope to attract between 300,000 and 500,000 visitors each year.”

    Councillor David Trimble, who oversees culture at the city council added: “It’s a hugely important step to hand over the castle to the trust. It means it will always be owned by the people of Nottingham”

    The project is due to be completed towards the end of 2020.

    A woman has been arrested, external after a man was found with serious injuries at the scene of a flat fire in Beeston.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the injured man was taken to hospital after the blaze in Lilac Crescent at about 06:00 yesterday.

    A 52-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.

    The father of Hannah Cobley, who is on trial for murdering a newborn baby, is giving evidence at Leicester Crown Court.

    Peter Cobley said he didn’t notice anything unusual about his daughter’s behaviour in April 2017 in the time leading up to the birth.

    The jury was shown a video of Mr Cobley being interviewed by police.

    In it he tells officers Hannah told him in hospital she had a baby in the outside toilet. He said: “She’s saying it wasn’t alive or anything."

    Mr Cobley said he'd found evidence of blood in the outside toilet but thought someone had had a nosebleed.

    Ms Cobley, 29 and from Stoney Stanton, denies murder.

    There's been a failed attempt to steal a cash machine from a shop in Coalville.

    Police said just before 03:00 this morning a vehicle was driven into the shutters of a shop in Cropston Drive.

    A chain was then tied around a free-standing machine inside the shop and an attempt was made to remove it using the a Ford Ranger pickup.

    The machine couldn't be removed and the vehicle was left at the scene. So far no one has been arrested.

    It was a dramatic night on a farm near Castleton after a farmer noticed a calf, just a few days old, was missing.

    The mother cow joined in with a search for the calf - it was eventually found down a shaft.

    The Derbyshire Cave Rescue was called out to help rescue the infant with their specialist equipment.

    A volunteer team member went down the shaft to check over the calf and prepared it to be hauled up to the surface.

    Thankfully, it appeared well and was named Henry after one of the rescuers. He was taken back to the farm to be reunited with his worried mother.

  11. Two injured in armed robbery at Lincolnshire post officepublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 10 May 2019

    Two people have been injured in an armed robbery at the Post Office on the High Street in Newton-on-Trent, between Lincoln and Gainsborough.

    Two men, dressed in black and wearing motorcycle helmets, threatened staff with a knife before making off with cash and cigarettes on a white motorbike at about 09:10 this morning.

    The bike was later found abandoned in Stokeham in Nottinghamshire.

    The people who were injured are receiving treatment and their injuries are not thought to be serious.

    Retailers, regulators and the police launched a pilot six months ago to tackle the problem of illegal "sweatshop" factories in Leicester.

    Sir Peter Soulsby, Leicester's mayor, said: "Some of the big retailers have been very helpful in indeed.

    "They were among the first to come to me and say we're very keen to source in the UK, we're very keen to build on Leicester's strength... but we are concerned about our reputation and we're concerned about Leicester's reputation."

    He believes it's in the interest of everyone in the task force to work together to make sure there are high standards of employment in the city and the industry.

    The ashes of a man which have been sitting on an undertaker's shelf have finally been scattered - more than 40 years after he died.

    Isaac Newton's remains were left unclaimed at the funeral directors in Oadby, Leicestershire, since his death in 1978.

    His story - not that of the 18th Century mathematician - was broadcast on Radio Leicester which garnered a huge response from people who remembered his family.

    A listener, whose mother-in-law used to have the surname Newton, heard about the search and was able to provide a family tree.

    This was passed on to the undertakers, which allowed them to track down his closest surviving relatives.

    They revealed there was a family grave at the United Reformed Church cemetery in Earl Shilton and it was decided his ashes should be scattered there.

    Jenny Gilbert, the undertaker, said: "Everything has been bought to a restful and a peaceful end."

    A BBC investigation found some textile factories in Leicester are paying below the minimum wage.

    It comes at a time when there are concerns about the pressure from "fast fashion" for cheap clothing and the low wages for the workforce.

    BBC Radio 4's Today programme found factories offering between £5.50 and £6 an hour. The minimum wage for over 21s is £8.21.

    Saaeed Kiljee is the owner of Figure of Eight fashion and chairman of Leicestershire's textiles association.

    He's previously been outspoken about the problem of "sweatshops" but he said the issues have since been addressed.

    He said: "The majority of good stores are afraid to work with Leicester suppliers because there is a negative image of Leicester where in reality there is nothing.

    "There was a problem, we never denied there was a problem, many things have changed."

    A man's been taken to hospital after a gun was fired in the Bilborough area of Nottingham.

    Police are investigating reports of a "weapon's discharge" on Brindley Road just before 21:00 last night.

    The man suffered minor injuries that aren't thought to be life changing. A car was also damaged as a result of the gunshot.

    Some of the employees at a Long Eaton firm say they are facing the loss of their home and workplace to make way for the new HS2 railway line.

    Leisure Furnishings, which makes furniture for caravans, is talking to the government about a possible relocation. Sites in Long Eaton are limited, and one option would see the company move out of the town.

    Managers said 60% of staff walk or cycle to work so they want to stay close by.

    Paul Cokayne works at Leisure Furnishings and lives a few hundred metres away from the factory. His home could also be demolished as part of the project.

    He told the BBC: "There's no point in me moving one way, because I can afford a house that way, and my firm moves the opposite way - I've got to commute then which is more expense."

    HS2 Limited has said it's met the company to listen to concerns and talk about the compensation packages in place.

    A project designed to prevent care home residents being given too much medicine is to be extended nationwide, after being tested in Nottinghamshire.

    The Derbyshire House care home in East Leake worked with a GP practice and offered fortnightly visits from a doctor.

    The idea cut the drugs' budget and reduced ambulance call-outs, as well as improving residents health and boosting carers' confidence.
