  2. Ashbourne bypass back on the drawing boardpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 31 May 2019

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

Derbyshire County Council aims to have a new "preferred option" on plans to build an Ashbourne bypass by early 2020.

Going back to the drawing board will cost the county council at least £750,000.

The extra money and proposed deadline will be discussed at a meeting of the authority's cabinet on 6 June.

This comes four months after the authority confessed that it was disappointed and dismayed that its plans to solve Ashbourne's long-running traffic problems with a bypass had not been given government support.

The council hopes to divert the A515 around to the west of Ashbourne to take hundreds of HGVs - and endless congestion - out of the town centre.

The county council has already spent £344,000 on collecting traffic data around Ashbourne to support the bypass project.

Following the failed pitch for government funding the council has been focusing on building a "time-consuming" business case fit to meet government grant standards.

It is to devise a new model for ensuring that its projects stand up to high-level scrutiny.

The athlete, who won 100m and 200m silver at the 2012 London Olympics, behind teammate Usain Bolt, told BBC East Midlands Today he's hoping to take up cricket as a sport next.

"I want to play some cricket in India. This is my first love," he said.

"I still love the sport - that's why I asked the ICC to bring me here to play with the kids and I'll look out for Chris [Gayle] later."

  6. Millions extra to be spent on affordable housingpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 31 May 2019

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

There are plans to spend an extra £7m on building, as well as buying, properties in Leicester which can be turned into affordable rented homes.

The city council claims about 786 new affordable homes are needed each year but only about 146 are secured.

Leicester City Council will use the money to buy some privately-owned homes, including blocks of flats and rows of houses.

It's the latest stage of a longer-term project to provide 1,500 more affordable rental properties over four years.

    Quote Message

New, affordable council housing is badly needed if we are to meet the level of housing need in the city. Since the government gave tenants the right to buy their council homes more than 30 years ago, we have been forced to sell thousands of council houses, which has drastically reduced what is available."

  10. King Power wins duty-free auctionpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 31 May 2019

    AFP

The owners of Leicester City Football Club have won an auction to run the duty-free shops at Bangkok's biggest airport - Suvarnabhumi Airport - priming the company to extend its monopoly over a concession worth nearly $2bn a year.

King Power was founded by the late Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Thailand's fourth richest man and chairman of Leicester City football club at the time of his death last year.

It has held a monopoly over Thailand's duty-free industry since 2006, prompting intense criticism from rivals who have lobbied for the monopoly to be broken up.

The death of Mr Vichai in a helicopter crash last year raised questions over the ability of his youngest son, Aiyawatt (right), to maintain King Power's hold.

But winning the auction suggests "that even without the patriarch, the conglomerate still has enough pull", political analyst Thitinan Pongsudhirak said.

At the time of his death in October, Mr Vichai's empire was worth around $5.2bn, according to Forbes.
