  14. Council looks to sell marketpublished at 18:00

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

Derby City Council is considering closing and selling Allenton Market – unless a community group proves it can save it.

The market, off Osmaston Road, has hit council budgets and resulted in a loss of £61,780 since 2012 and has been predicted to cost a further £10,000 for another year, the Local Democracy Reporter Service said.

It reports community groups are being offered the chance to take it on instead if they can form a "viable business case".

Prospective groups will have eight weeks to make their bid for the market which has been open since 1980.

Council officers said the occupancy of stalls is “very poor” and this has made the market non-viable. It added that “intervention is clearly required and ‘doing nothing’ is not an effective response”.

Councillor Mick Barker said: “The last thing we want is to close the market down. The community, if they want this market, can look to take it on themselves.”

Julie Shaw had gone to stay at the couple's home to babysit their daughter in case they needed to go to hospital in the night.

When she arrived, Beth Islip's waters had broken and there wasn't enough time to get her to hospital.

Just 13 minutes after arriving, Ms Shaw had delivered baby Alfie.

Ms Shaw said: “I was only meant to be going to look after my granddaughter but as it happened I ended up being present to witness the birth of my grandson.

"It was such a lovely, magical moment to be there for the birth of my own grandson."

Miss Islip described the delivery as a "special moment".

She said: "I’m so pleased she ended up delivering my second baby Alfie in our home. It was all very surreal."

She said a home birth hadn't been something she'd planned but it worked out well, especially for her daughter Evie who slept through the whole birth and got to meet her baby brother the next morning.

  17. Homes plan gets green light despite rare butterfly concernspublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 9 July 2019

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

Plans to build homes on a former mining site in Derbyshire have been approved despite fears rare butterflies would be put at risk.

Welbeck Estates intends to build 450 homes, a huge country park, new wetland areas and 15 acres of space for businesses on the former Whitwell Colliery site, north of Bolsover.

However, the land has been home to the dingy skipper, small heath, common blue and brown argus since mining ceased 33 years ago.

East Midlands Butterfly Conservation said construction would lead to much of the butterfly habitat being damaged.

At a meeting yesterday, Derbyshire County Council - in approving the plans - ensured the developer committed to 25 years of management of all the site's open spaces and country park.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said this is to alleviate the concerns of the butterfly group and also the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, which also fears the loss of vital habitats.

Bolsover District Council said the site - which has been vacant since 1986 - has become an eyesore and also recommended the plans be approved.
