    A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot and "assaulted with a bladed weapon".

    Police were called to Tolney Lane, in Newark, shortly before 16:00 on Wednesday.

    A 30-year-old man was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre with injuries not believed to be life-threatening and was later discharged.

    The arrested man, 50, remains in custody.

    Det Insp Steve Wragg said: "The people involved are known to each other.

    "We are urging anyone with any information about what happened or those responsible to please get in touch to help us understand what happened."

    A cordon remains in place at the scene.

    Police said it is not connected to a shooting in Top Valley on Tuesday night, which remains under investigation.

    The force has not given further details on the "bladed weapon".

    Post deliveries in Nottingham have been "temporarily disrupted" after the Royal Mail centre in Beeston was flooded.

    A spokesperson for the postal service said: "The customer service point is operating as normal and there is no impact on collection of mail."

    Managers at the site are currently carrying out a risk assessment to see when the mail centre can fully reopen.

    The description of a car - believed to be linked to a double shooting in Nottingham - has been released by police in another appeal for information.

    Nottinghamshire Police said two men - one in his 20s and one in his 30s - each received a single gunshot wound to their legs while they were in the Hucknall Road area of Top Valley shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

    They were taken to hospital and one of the men has since been discharged.

    The other is still receiving treatment for injuries which are not life-threatening or life-altering.

    It is thought a black Audi A8 was driven in Hucknall Road and Moor Bridge around the time of the shooting.

    Detectives are "exploring the idea" the shooting may have happened within the car, which has been recovered.

    Det Insp Ruby Burrow added: "This incident was an isolated, targeted attack and we believe that the victims and suspects were known to one another."

    Anyone with any information is asked to call the force on 101.

    Parts of the East Midlands were hit by floods as storms broke out across the region.

    Almost an inch of rain fell within an hour in Loughborough, Leicestershire, on Wednesday evening.

    Areas of Nottinghamshire were also badly affected, including Beeston and Ruddington.

    Major roads were blocked and shops were flooded, just days after reopening following the coronavirus lockdown.

    In Beeston, BBC reporter Steve Beech said he had "never seen anything like it" in almost 20 years.

    Police have praised those who took part in a take a knee protest in Nottingham yesterday following the death of George Floyd in the US.

    Nottinghamshire Police said about 40 people attended the event in Old Market Square.

    Socially distanced protesters knelt for eight minutes and 46 seconds - the same length of time a police officer knelt on Mr Floyd's neck.

    Supt Paul Winter, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We would like to thank people who made this protest a peaceful and dignified event.

    "It was a well-organised event and the organisers ensured that people adhered to the social distancing guidelines, ensuring it could go ahead safely. People also wore face masks during the protest."

    The son of a man who went missing two weeks ago has appealed for help to find his father who he had only recently reunited with.

    Michael Dennington, 58, was reported missing from the Mansfield area on Sunday 31 May.

    Jason Taylor, who had been estranged from his father for about 14 years, told Nottinghamshire Police his father he been back in his life for about five weeks and he was "really enjoying" seeing him again.

    Mr Dennington, who police said has mental health issues and spends time sleeping rough or sofa-surfing, is described as being of a slim build, 5ft 2in tall with dark brown, short hair.

    He has links to Newark, Selston, Ollerton, Clipstone, Worksop, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, as well as Cleethorpes, Glossop and Derby.

    Mr Taylor added: "Dad, if you are out there - we are so, so worried about you so please just pick up the phone, just to let us know you're OK."

    Police have released CCTV footage of Mr Dennington leaving King's Mill Hospital at about 15:24 on 26 May, his last official sighting.

    Nottinghamshire Police have warned drivers "to take extra care on the roads" after floods in the county yesterday evening.

    A yellow weather warning for more rain remains in place across the region until midday.

    Police urged drivers not to drive through large amounts of standing water, and to remember braking distances in wet weather are longer.

    Officers said despite flooding in several areas yesterday, "no-one has had to be evacuated from properties".

    Laura Longford's garden was inundated along with nearby garages, leaving her husband, Liam, and son, Lawson, to inspect the damage.

    She said: "It was horrendous and came from nowhere!

    "I'm now wondering if I will have to redo my whole garden... again! Only just had it done and wondering if all my items in my shed are saveable or not."
