  10. 'Anger' as Broadmarsh business told not to reopenpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

    BBC Radio Nottingham

A businesswoman in the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre said she was "shocked" and "angry" to be told she could not reopen on Monday as she was finishing off preparations.

The redevelopment of the centre has been put on hold due to coronavirus and owner Intu's financial difficulties, meaning parts of it are still a building site.

Johanna Riley, manager at Tailors, said they had spent a week preparing to reopen, only to be told on Friday afternoon they would not be able to.

"It was a big blow," she said. "We had no clue it was going to happen."

They have now decided to relocate and Ms Riley said Intu, who manages the centre, needs to treat its shop owners better.

She added: "We're excited to move and to make a fresh start released from that negativity of Intu."

Intu said the pandemic and their current financial position meant they were forced to pause work on the site.

A spokesman added: "It's become clear that we can't reopen our doors with construction at a standstill and the site the way it currently is. There are health and safety considerations to take into account and we're not prepared to put anyone at risk.

"We know this will be disappointing news, but we feel that this is the responsible thing to do.

"We have let our people, our brand customers and our partners at the council know and we will continue to work with them on the future of the centre."

  14. Leicester teen: School meals 'the last lifeline'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

    Liam Barnes
    BBC News

Free school meals are "the last lifeline" to help vulnerable children get fed, a 15-year-old from Leicester has said.

Dev told BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine programme that he and his brother "rely on free school meals", which also "takes the stress" off his parents who "work as hard as they can" and do "an amazing job".

Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford has been among the campaigners calling for a voucher programme in England to continue through the summer holidays, and after initially saying it would not extend the scheme, the government has today confirmed it will now run through the holidays.

Before the government's announcement, Dev said: "It's really scary because my free school meals are going to be stolen over the summer, and I don't know for six weeks what I'm going to do without a decent lunch."

  15. School stays open despite coronavirus casepublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

A Hinckley primary school has confirmed it remains open, despite a pupil testing positive for coronavirus.

St Peter's Primary, on London Road, said it became aware that a pupil had tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

The case is an example of the "bubble" system, which sees pupils taught in groups of no more than 15 at a time and spending breaks and lunchtime together without mixing with other children in the school.

Neil Lockyer, chief executive officer for the St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service all parents in the child's bubble group have been contacted "in accordance with guidance from the Department for Education", while the room used by the group has been sealed off for three days so a deep clean can take place.

One parent praised the school's response, saying they are "doing exactly what they should in the situation", but criticised government guidance for not requiring families of the pupils who were in the bubble to also self-isolate for 14 days.

The creator of the Belper Moo says he hopes the community spirit fostered by the group groaning will carry on long after the last lowing is udder-ed.

Derbyshire's own effort to lift knockdown boredom became a global sensation, with fans joining in from Australia, India, Japan, and the US.

It was brought to an end on Sunday night after more than 80 days of people standing on their doorsteps and bellowing like a bovine for a couple of minutes.

Jasper Ward, who came up with the idea, says he doesn't know if it was "a eureka moment or a moment of insanity" to start the mooing, but felt now was the right time to stop it so that it remains "special" and a reminder of people helping each other during the darkest days of lockdown.

He now has plans to create an "annual moo event" to keep the "sense of togetherness" going and remember the time when Belper "made the world smile".

    Quote Message

It doesn't really feel like lockdown any more, certainly not the way it did in April, so I thought the danger was that we would take something that had been really special and perhaps wear it out if we didn't end on a high."
