  5. Woman sentenced after 'stealing elderly friend's life savings'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    Sonia Kataria
    BBC News

A woman has been given a suspended prison sentence after "stealing an elderly friend's life savings".

Maria Marston, 54, from Leicestershire, was loaned £55,000 in 2006 and 2007 and promised to repay it when she inherited £3.5m from a trust fund that did not exist, the Insolvency Service said.

The victim, now 83, who does not want to be named, was told by Marston she could not access the fund when she turned 40 in 2007 and advised the friend to petition for Marston’s bankruptcy saying it would help her access the money, the service added.

The bankruptcy petition sparked an Insolvency Service investigation and Marston was charged.

The victim said the situation had "subjected both myself and my family to 15 years of stress, suffering and extensive financial hardship".

She added it was a "body blow" to find out in court that her so-called friend had zero assets.

Glenn Wicks, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said Marston's "deception... left her close friend with no savings for many years".

Marston, of Avenue Road, in Queniborough, admitted to three counts of obtaining property by deception and three counts of fraud by false representation at an earlier hearing.

She was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for two years, ordered to pay £18,173 in compensation after paying £50,000 and 100 hours of unpaid work at Leicester Crown Court on Monday.

    BBC News

A gang who burgled a Leicstershire house twice in two days has been sentenced.

Leicestershire Police said £100,000 worth of items were stolen from a house in Burbage, which included car keys and empty watch boxes.

It said when suspects became aware the watches were worth a considerable amount of money they returned two days later.

The force said Ryan Raczowski, Aaron Powell and Scott Williams broke into the property while the occupants were putting their two young children to bed.

The two adult victims were threatened with knives and hammers and ordered to hand over their mobile phones and the watches.

Two others, Luke Frederick and Lee Ryan Smith were charged for their roles in the burglary and handling stolen goods.

On Friday, Williams (pictured right), aged 40, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and was jailed for nine years.

Luke Frederick, 31, of Crabtree, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Those previously sentenced in July 2020 were:

    • Raczowski (pictured left), 29, formerly of The Moorfield, Coventry, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and was jailed for 13 years.
    • Powell, aged 20, admitted conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and was sentenced to 16 months in prison, which will run consecutively to an eight year sentence he was already serving for an unrelated offence.
    • Smith (pictured centre), aged 26, also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods and was handed three years in prison. This will run consecutively to a sentence of three years and two months he was already serving for an unrelated matter.

Investigator Rosie Wood said it had been "a lengthy and complex investigation".

She added: “The aggravated burglary committed in Burbage was a particularly serious and one which was witnessed by the victims’ two young children. The trauma of that evening will stay with them for a very long time.

“The three defendants responsible for those offences had no qualms about returning to the scene of their original crime. They were motivated by greed."

One lane has re-opened on the M1 past a lorry crash and fuel spillage which closed the northbound side spanning three junctions earlier.

The carriageway was shut between junctions 26 and 28 after a crash between a Nissan Navara and a lorry, police said.
