  1. Cider maker abandons production for year due to pandemicpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

A Lincolnshire cider-maker has abandoned production for this year because of unsold stock due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Skidbrooke Cyder in Louth has 20,000 litres of cider remaining unsold because of the lockdown, preventing it from producing more.

Guy Williams, a partner in the business, says confidence isn't good in the pub trade at the moment and pubs don't want to overstock in case there is another lockdown.

He says: "At the moment we have about 20,000 litres tanked and ready for sale, which doesn't leave us any space for making cider this year.

"Of course, it would give us too much to sell for next year anyway. It's the perfect storm."

About 40% of A-Level results were downgraded after the exams regulator Ofqual used an algorithm based on schools' previous results.

Gainsborough Conserative MP Sir Edward Leigh said he had written to the schools minister after being contacted by David Allsop, the headteacher of Queen Elizabeth's High School, who said the results day was the worst in his 30-year career in education.

Sir Edward said the school had been hit particularly hard and he'd had several e-mails and letters from parents.

He said: "It seems to me ridiculous that this year's cohort has been marked down by an algorithm based on last year's results and this is the case I'm making to the minister.

"I think David Allsop has a very good case and I'm fully behind him. I think the whole thing should be reconsidered. The only thing we can probably do now is to accept teacher's assessments."

However, Sir Edward stopped short of calling for the education secretary Gavin Williamson to resign, adding: "I'm not the sort of person who immediately calls for political scalps. I personally think if he's been given a job to do, he should be allowed to finish it."

Chris Higgins, director of operations at the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, says the trust has wanted to cut the number of patients travelling for acute care for some time and "coronavirus has magnified this challenge":

Over the last two years we have had more females admitted to acute in-patient services than males and these additional beds will allow us flexibility across our entire adult acute in-patient services."

In England, 36% of entries had a lower grade than teachers predicted and 3% were down two grades, in results after exams were cancelled by the pandemic.

Lord Gary Porter, who's also leader of South Holland District Council, says ministers had plenty of time to avoid this.

However, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the results were a "robust set of grades".

Staff at RSPB Frampton Marsh, near Boston, found the animal earlier this week.

Some councils in Lincolnshire have banned balloon releases on their land in the past few months.

But Dr Chris Andrews, from the reserve, says the message isn't getting through.

He says: "They can be a real pain both to wildlife, which might get tangled up in it or try to eat it, to livestock like this poor cow.

"Cows, horses and sheep might try to eat it, and this shows they do end up choking to death on it."

The RSPB has called for people not to release balloons and sky lanterns due to the risk they pose to animals.

  14. Star student Libby makes the grade in Spaldingpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 13 August 2020

It's been a day of mixed emotions as students across Lincolnshire received their A level results.

    Libby gets her results

It was good news for Libby, from Spalding, who has achieved three A* grades.

She said: "I'm really happy with that. It's been a long wait. Anything close to three As I would have been happy with, so this is the icing on the cake.

"It's been a year and a half of work. We got cut short at the end, but it's nice to know hard work has paid off."

Libby will now go on to study medicine at the University of Nottingham.

She added: "The next five years are going to be incredibly tense but exciting."

But it wasn't good news for all students, with about a third of grades thought to have been downgraded from those suggested by teachers.

Dale Hardy, head of Sir Robert Pattinson Academy in North Hykeham, said he had some questions about the results there:

"While most of our grades across most of our subjects have been completely upheld, there are a small number where we've thought, 'Not sure how that's been arrived at'.

"We are receiving reports from exam boards with explanations about how they have been arrived at, but from where I'm sitting there is still some more work to do."
