The Everyman Cinema will open on 21 August in the redeveloped Cornhill quarter of the city.

The opening has been repeatedly pushed back because of a lack of big films being released.

Manager Carl Frith said: “It’s been a case of waiting to see which films are going to be released in the current climate.

"It’s difficult with studios pushing their films back, but we’ve had confirmation of the film Tenet being released and we’ve just been getting everything ready to open.

“We’ve needed someone to take that leap to release the next film after lockdown and this is a massive chance for us to get people in to the cinema and show them something new.

“The experience is not going to be that different. Obviously, social distancing in the screens will mean it might feel a little emptier than if it was sold out, but all social distancing guidelines are in place.”

A report before Boston Town Area Committee sets out plans for a four-day event in the Bargate Green car park starting on the day of the Christmas lights switch-on.

The market would include alpine wooden huts, a small fairground ride, live music and a food and drink area.

It comes after this year's Christmas markets in both Lincoln and Sleaford were cancelled.

Instead of a parade, residents will be asked to display a non-flammable candle in their window while 1,620 lanterns will be placed in various locations around the town.

The unspent money would increase the town's Christmas budget from £14,500 to £22,000.

Council officers have planned for a second Covid-19 outbreak and if the event does not go ahead, bookings would be able to transfer to 2021, the report says.

The council's events team has also proposed a new four-day event to be held between 1-4 July in 2021, which could incorporate both Boston Bike Night and a classic car show, it adds.

The government recently announced that theatres may open with social distancing measures in place from 1 August.

But a statement on the New Theatre Royal's Facebook page, external says it will remain closed and staff will stay furloughed.

It states: "We hope to receive financial support from the government in the coming weeks following recent announcements, all of which will help secure the future of the venue along with all our staff.

"We look forward to announcing our reopening date as soon as possible with a full programme of events for everyone to enjoy."

The statement adds that money held by the theatre is essential to its re-opening and has asked all ticket holders, where possible, not to ask for refunds but to support the theatre when it does re-open.
