HM Prison Service has decided that Morton Hall, in Swinderby, near Lincoln, will return to its original use as a prison, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Those in detention there will be transferred to other centres before the change, which is due to be made next year.

Earlier this year, inspectors raised concerns about how long people were being held on the site and the severe impact it was having on their mental health.

They also noted that self-harm among detainees was at an unacceptable level, although they did praise staff for doing their best to look after the men being held.

  6. Council describes Oldrids closure as a 'huge blow' to townpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

The closure of a Lincolnshire department store after more than two centuries trading at the site has been described by the local council as a "huge blow" to the town.

The owners of Oldrids, in Boston, announced earlier the shop, which has been in the town centre for 216 years, would be closed.

The company said the store had been unprofitable "for several years" and the coronavirus pandemic was one of the reasons for the closure.

Responding to the "sad news" Boston Borough Council posted the following message on social media:

  7. Plans for 14 apartments in former motorcycle shoppublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

New plans for apartments on the site of a former motorcycle shop on Lincoln’s Carholme Road have been submitted by a developer.

    PlansImage source, Carholme Developments

Carholme Developments, through Design Space Architecture, has applied to the City of Lincoln Council to build 14 self-contained apartments with 14 associated parking spaces on the former site of Jack Machin Motorcycles, which closed in summer 2019.

In May, the council rejected previous plans by JMF Chartered Architects to build five three-storey blocks on the site for a total of 15 residential apartments.

Councillors said the development would cause harm to the area “by reason of the height, massing and design of the building” and that it sat too far forward of nearby properties.

The new proposals include two mainly three-storey blocks running parallel with Carholme Road and Derwent Street, which will “step-down” to two storeys at the boundaries with each of their neighbours.

The East Coast Outreach food charity in Louth says many vulnerable families don't know the scheme is continuing throughout the six weeks holiday.

Meanwhile, Julie Speed, from the charity, says many people living in rural parts of the county also can't get to one of the shops where the vouchers can be spent:

    Quote Message

Particularly families that are struggling, they really don't have the option of spending money to travel to places and get things. It's inaccessible to a lot of people."

    Julie Speed, East Coast Outreach

The government says the vouchers can be spent at a variety of stores, including Aldi, Morrison's, Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

It adds that about 1.3 million pupils will benefit from the scheme to cover the summer break.

  12. Boston store confirms closure after over 215 yearspublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

Oldrids department store in Boston town centre looks set to close permanently.

    Oldrids closure sign

Oldrids' Downtown shops in Boston and Grantham have reopened as coronavirus lockdown restrictions are eased, but its town centre store has remained closed.

The firm has been trading from the town centre site for 216 years but, in a statement, says its flagship store has not made a profit "for several years".

The company highlights the coronavirus pandemic, a rise in employment costs and the closure of the nearby Marks and Spencer store leading to a drop in footfall as reasons for the move.

Oldrids' other sites, including the one on the outskirts of the town and the garden centre in Grantham will continue to operate, it's been confirmed.

A consultation has begun with the employees affected and it's not yet known how many jobs are at risk.

    Quote Message

Given that we have been trading in the town for more than two centuries, we will not be alone in finding it very genuinely upsetting to contemplate the centre of Boston without Oldrids."

  15. Farmer's anger after sheep is burned alive in fieldpublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

The owner of a sheep which was hit by a car and then deliberately set on fire at a farm in Lincolnshire says he's shocked and furious about what's happened.

It's believed that a vehicle was driven into a field at Surfleet Marsh, near Spalding, last Friday or Saturday before running over three sheep.

One of those animals was then set alight.

All the animals subsequently died or had to be put down and eight more sheep which had been in the field are still missing.

It's believed they could have been stolen or chased into the River Welland.

Farmer Tom French says he couldn't believe what had happened when he found out:

Luke Daniels turned his Urban Angels hairdressers in Navenby into a gelato and milkshake business when his business wasn't allowed to operate during the height of the lockdown.

However, it's proved so successful that he faced a dilemma when he was recently allowed to cut hair again.

He's now moved the new business into Navenby's former village tearoom so he can keep all his customers happy but he says they have more planned:

    Quote Message

Over the next few months we will create a proper kitchen area with hatch - and then we'll bring the tearooms back to the village. We didn't think we'd end up with another couple of businesses. It's been fantastic."
