    The Lincoln Grand Prix has been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The cycle race which attracts some of the sport's top riders had been due to take place in August, having been postponed from its original date in May, but has now been called off.

    In a statement, external organisers said: While we had hoped to move from May to the alternative date of 15th-16th August, we have decided to cancel this year’s race following discussions with British Cycling.

    "Suspension of international and national racing in Britain was this week extended to September 1 as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and that means we must now look forward to next year."

    The men's race has been running continuously since 1956 - longer than any other race in the UK, organisers claim.

    It was feared the 2020 race would not take place due to lack of sponsorship before a two-year deal was been agreed with British cycling clothing firm Rapha.

  2. Plans put forward to revamp Horncastle town centrepublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 29 May 2020

    A proposal has been put forward to create extra seating in the centre of Horncastle in the style of a Mediterranean plaza.

    The idea's being put forward by town councillor, Al Lockwood, in an effort to revitalise struggling cafes and businesses.

    He says there are obstacles to be overcome, but it could be made to work.

  3. Woman robbed of 'large amount' of cash in Skegnesspublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 29 May 2020

    A woman has been left shaken after she was robbed of a "large amount of cash", say police.

    The incident happened at about 11:00 on Wednesday on Algitha Road shortly after the woman had visited the NatWest Bank on Grand Parade.

    Officers say after taking the cash the male suspect jumped over a fence and ran through a garden into a car park behind some houses before getting in to a silver car.

    Lincolnshire Police say they believe the suspect may have also visited the bank.

    The woman was left shaken and received minor injuries.

    Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.

    Lincoln City have confirmed that several of their promotion and Wembley heroes are set to leave the club.

    Overnight the Imps have released their retained list for next season.

    The most eye catching of those not offered new terms are fans' favourite Michael Bostwick, full back Neal Eardley, club captain Lee Frecklington, goalkeeper Josh Vickers, Tom Pett and Jason Shackell.

    In fact only one out of contract player has been offered a new deal, 17-year-old Ellis Chapman.

    The news means the Imps will have 13 first team players on their books at the end of the season

  5. Need for homemade scrubs 'not going away'published at 12:33 British Summer Time 29 May 2020

    A group of volunteers will continue producing scrubs for health workers in Lincolnshire despite a fall in the number of coronavirus cases in Lincolnshire, they say.

    About 500 volunteers in Horncastle have so far made over 1,500 sets of scrubs during lockdown - and not all in traditional colours (pictured).

    Cases of the virus, and the number of deaths of people who've tested positive for Covid-19, have tailed off in Lincolnshire.

    But the volunteers say despite that, workers in care homes and hospitals are telling them they still need them.

    Firefighters have spent the night battling a fire in woodland near Gainsborough.

    Six fire engines were deployed to Laughton Wood yesterday evening after the fire broke out.

    At its height, people living nearby were urged to keep their doors and windows shut.

    Earlier today Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Service said firefighters were "dampening down and steady progress is being made".

  7. Wrecked WW2 aircraft discovered on Cleethorpes beachpublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 29 May 2020

    The remains of a crashed World War Two aircraft have been discovered on a beach by dog walkers.

    Graham Holden and his partner found the wreckage after shifting sands uncovered the site at Cleethorpes.

    According to the Grimsby Telegraph, external, the aeroplane is believed to be an RAF Bristol Beaufighter which crashed soon after take-off from nearby North Coates in Lincolnshire in April 1944.

    Mr Holden said he was "amazed" to have found the wreck.

    The Coastguard has asked people to stop searching for the wreck as mud and fast incoming tides make the area dangerous.

    Farmers in Lincolnshire are warning that crop yields could be affected by high temperatures this year.

    Rachel Bowles, who farms near Gainsborough, says the farming community is worried about the cost of feeding livestock because "nothing is growing at the moment".

    It comes almost a year after heavy flooding affected farming across Lincolnshire (pictured).

    Some areas of farmland still haven't returned to their usual output in parts of the county.

    Visitors to a market at a Lincolnshire theme park will be subject to temperature checks and could be refused entry if they have a fever.

    The checks are part of a series of measures being put in place ahead of the reopening of the market at Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells on 3 June.

    Boris Johnson announced on Monday that open air markets could reopen from the start of next month.

    Other measures being introduced at the tourist attraction include limited capacity, a one-way system and a ban on pets.

    Rides and other attractions at the site will remain closed.

    Work at the A17/A153 Rugby Club Junction will see new approach lanes and traffic signals installed aimed at reducing travel times.

    Motorists are being warned of lane closures, temporary traffic signals and night-time road closures.

    Bike and motoring chain Halfords is to reopen one of its Lincoln outlets as coronavirus lockdown rules are eased, it's been confirmed.

    Halfords' Lincoln Tritton store is to reopen - one of 53 of the firm's shops across the country to open its doors again - with bosses saying there's been a surge in bike sales.

    The reopened stores will allow in a limited number of shoppers under a model described as "retail lite".

    Halfords has been allowed to remain open throughout the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, classed as an "essential" business, but many of its stores have not been open for browsing.

    The decision comes a day after the government said most non-essential retailers could reopen from 15 June.

    Halfords said: "There's no timetable or deadline for doing so and the pace will instead be dictated entirely by the company's confidence it can keep its colleagues and customers safe."

    The firm's chief executive, Graham Stapleton, said: "There's been a big surge in demand for our bike products and services as people have taken to cycling during the lockdown.

    "We're anticipating a similar demand for our motoring products and services in the coming days, as people begin to use vehicles again that in some cases will have been off the road for many weeks."

  13. Two arrested after cannabis find in Granthampublished at 09:00

    Two men have been arrested in connection with the discovery of a cannabis farm in Grantham, police have confirmed.

    Officers attended the address, on West Gate, at about 23:15 on Monday where they discovered the plants being grown.

    A 41-year-old man and a man aged 46 were arrested and remain in custody.

    Anyone with information about this is being asked to get in touch with Lincolnshire Police.

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a cannabis grow discovered in Grantham.

    Lincolnshire Police said the plants were found at an address in West Gate at about 23:20 on Monday.

    The force said two men, aged 41 and 46, have been arrested in connection with the matter.

    A Lincolnshire fruit farmer says he is hoping to re-open next week to people wanting pick their own strawberries and raspberries.

    Syston Fruit Farms, near Grantham, has been closed since the end of March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    But from next week they hope to reopen to the public, with visitors asked to call ahead so staff can make sure it doesn’t become over-crowded.

    Paul Clegg, from the farm, said: "I'm really looking forward to being back open. We spend all year growing it and they're looking great this year.

    "I was really worried that if we weren't able to open that all the hard work and effort would go to waste."

    Work on a major project to restore an historic World War Two aircraft to airworthy condition looks set to face serious delays due to the coronavirus lockdown, it's been confirmed.

    Staff at Lincolnshire's Aviation Heritage Centre say work on the iconic Lancaster Bomber which is based at the centre is now going to have to be put off for a couple of years.

    Andrew Panton, from the centre, says the loss of income has slowed everything down:

    The Lincolnshire Show, external is to be be hosted online this year after organisers were forced to cancel the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    Organisers, the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), say the event will take place on 24 June and include educational and agricultural content, cookery demonstrations, entertainment, online shopping and a host of exhibitors.

    Jayne Southall, CEO of the LAS said: “Although we were absolutely devastated to cancel the traditional Lincolnshire Show this year, we are so excited to launch the Lincolnshire Show Online and venture into the virtual world, a first for the Lincolnshire Show.

    People living on the Lincolnshire coast are being reassured their safety is being put ahead of tourism as coronavirus restrictions continue to be eased.

    There's been growing concern about visitors overwhelming the county's beaches now people are allowed to travel without restriction.

    Despite calls to keep people away from Lincolnshire's beaches, the sole open disabled toilet at Skegness saw a 40-minute-long queue, external (pictured) one day last week.

    East Lindsey District Council has been urging tourists to stay away, but re-opened car parks and toilets for the Bank Holiday weekend.

    In an open letter to local residents, East Lindsey District Council leader Craig Leyland says every decision is being made very carefully as the lockdown continues to ease.
