Twiggy had lived at Bransby Horses, near Lincoln, since 2002 after being found injured at the side of the road.
The charity say she was a firm favourite, but her health deteriorated as she got older and she would have struggled to get through the winter.
Quote MessageWhile it’s never easy to say goodbye to any animal, our founding principle as a charity is to do what is best for the horse every time, and sometimes, sadly, this means putting a horse to sleep in order to avoid it suffering any further pain or distress. It fills me with happiness, however, to know that, thanks to the public’s generosity, we were able to provide Twiggy with 18 years of love and care, ensuring she lived the most comfortable and happy life possible while she was with us.

Coronavirus infections are continuing to rise rapidly, with an estimated 27,900 new cases a day in England, the Office for National Statistics says.
This is a 60% increase on the previous week, based on a survey of people in households with or without symptoms.
This figure is far higher than the number of confirmed cases announced by the government each day.
It comes as the highest level of restrictions are introduced in more of the UK.
The increase in people testing positive in recent weeks is being driven by high rates in older teenagers and young adults, the ONS survey, external says.
It found steep increases in infection rates in the north west, the north east, Yorkshire and the Humber.
The figures estimate that one in 160 people in England had the virus in the week to 8 October.

Multi-million pound road improvements near Sleaford have been completed.
New lanes and traffic signals have been added to the junction of the A17 and A153 by the town's Rugby Club.
It is hoped the work will improve safety at the junction, which has seen more than 20 collisons over the past ten years.
John Siddle, spokesperson for Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: "We have a long history of data from this junction and welcome the completion of the work that has been carried out to make it safer.
"The changes made to the junction mean it will now be traffic light controlled, have a reduced speed limit and more defined space, making it easier for those larger vehicles using it.
"We believe these measures will reduce the significant amount of injuries that occur here each year, making it safer for all."

Mr Green said "the last two and a half years have felt like hell on earth".
"Hopefully the judge will accept the arguments put forward by my legal team and this nightmare will be over. My champagne remains on ice!"
