Debenhams in Lincoln looks lets to close after efforts to find a buyer for the chain failed when JD Sports pulled out of talks this morning.
About 12,000 jobs are likely to be lost when the chain's 124 UK stores close.
The news comes just hours after Topshop owner Arcadia fell into administration, putting 13,000 jobs at risk.
There have been suggestions that JD Sports pulled out of bidding for Debenhams because of the collapse of Arcadia, which is the biggest concession operator in Debenhams.
However, senior sources at Arcadia dismissed any link and told the BBC it was being blamed for the collapse of a deal that had never been agreed.
Lincolnshire retail expert Clare Bailey says Debenhams and Arcadia have essentially pushed each other out of existence.
Quote MessageDebenhams' financial viability depends on the concessions paying them for space and a percentage of sales. And JD, as you can rightly imagine, did not wish to continue the process of going ahead with the Debenhams rescue now that Debenhams would not have the financial support from the Arcadia concessions."

Some MPs in Lincolnshire are still not happy about the county being placed in the highest coronavirus restriction tier when lockdown ends.
The whole of Lincolnshire is to be placed in tier three, with the additional restrictions shown in the poster above, from 00:01 on Wednesday.
MPs will vote later on the government's proposals for stricter tiers across England after a debate in the Commons.
Gainsborough Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh tweeted yesterday to say he had been to see the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, alongside Conservative MP Sir John Hayes, who represents South Holland and the Deepings, and Grantham and Stamford's Conservative MP Gareth Davies.
Sir John said he believed the tier system was unfair.
Quote MessageThis is an exceptional situation for the government, and that requires extraordinary measures. I accept that. It's very difficult situation balancing lives against livelihoods. But I've got to think of the families and firms in my constituency who will be detrimentally affected by this, and it's just not good enough. We should not be in tier three."
