  3. Man rescued from shop blazepublished at 14:00

    A man was rescued from a shop fire on Barking Road this morning.

    London Fire Brigade, external was called just before 07:00 and found the man suffering from smoke inhalation. He was taken to hospital.

    The fire damaged part of the ground floor. An investigation into the cause of it is under way.

  6. Strike action due to start on Calendonian rail sleeper servicespublished at 13:02

    Strike action will start later on rail sleeper services between Scotland and London.

    There will be no further sleeper services before Christmas, in spite of this normally being an especially busy period.

    Members of the RMT union voted to back the 48-hour strike in a dispute with operator Serco over train defects.

    Serco said that any faults on its rolling stock had been repaired, or would be repaired.

    The London International Horse Show has ended in controversial fashion after Grand Prix winner Bertram Allen was disqualified by the stewards shortly before the awards presentation.

    The rules specify mandatory disqualification if there is bleeding on the horse's flank, in the mouth or nose, or marks indicating excessive use of the spur or whip.  

    Michael Whitaker from the riding dynasty went on to be crowned the winner with his horse Viking.

    A Muslim convert with schizophrenia who tried to travel to Somalia to join an Islamist terror group days after release from Springfield Hospital, a mental health unit, in south London, has been jailed

    Trevor Mulindwa, 21, of Halliwell Close, Mitcham, was arrested in a prayer room at Heathrow Airport before he could leave for Mogadishu on 17 September last year, Kingston Crown Court heard. 

    He was sentenced to six years by a judge at Kingston Crown Court.

  10. World War Two bunker to be turned into cafepublished at 11:56

    A listed building in south London - once used as a World War two bunker - is to be converted into a cafe and exhibition space.

    Transport for London's, external submitted a planning application to transform the historic rotunda on the south eastern corner of Clapham Common, opposite Clapham South Tube station.

    Its tunnels were used as a shelter during the war, and housed Jamaican people who arrived on the Windrush in 1948.  

  11. Calls to restrict school internet use to 'prevent radicalisation'published at 11:31

    The government wants schools in England to restrict and monitor internet access to reduce the risk of pupils being radicalised by extremists.

    Ministers say some children who have travelled or tried to travel to Syria - including three from Bethnal Green Academy - were able to access information about so-called Islamic State group on school computers. 

    Schools minister, Nick Gibb, says they're trying to prevent problems before they arise. 

  12. Life is about to get 'more expensive' - renting and buying in Londonpublished at 11:15

    The cost of buying or renting a home in the UK is expected to rise faster than wages next year.

    A report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says demand for property isn't being matched by supply.

    City Hall said there were plans to build 200,000 homes in London in the next 20 years.

    House prices are expected to rise by 5% on average in the capital in 2016.

  13. Hatton Garden trial: "The solicitor kicked me under the table'published at 10:52

    One of the men accused of being involved in the Hatton Garden raid has told Woolwich Crown Court he stopped talking during a police interview "Because the solicitor kicked me under the table".

    Jon Harbinson, 42 is said to have been involved in the plan to get rid of the cash, diamonds and jewellery stolen by a gang in the heist.

    He denies being involved in the burglary. The trial continues.

  15. Uber drivers hand in petition at TfL HQpublished at 10:14

    Uber has handed in its petition at Transport for London headquarters against a consultation on how it operates, which is due to end tomorrow.

    In September, TFL asked industry figures to submit their opinions on a raft of measures which could be introduced for the app-based mini-cab drivers 

    These include a five minute waiting time before the next pick up and all drivers being able to speak English.

  16. Watch: Burglars steal presents from under Christmas treepublished at 09:58

    CCTV has been released of two men police want to speak to in connection with the theft of presents from under a Christmas tree in Mitcham.

    Items including jewellery, photographic equipment, a tablet and laptop were taken from under the tree at an address on Ashbourne Road between Saturday and Monday.

    The suspects are believed to have climbed over the rear garden fence before breaking into the rear of the house, wrecking the cuddly toys and games of the victims' baby and leaving dirty footprints about the house.

    CCTV footage shows two men in the house on 12 December before they appear again on Sunday, 13 December.

  17. Jermaine Baker inquest: Coroner expresses 'deepest sympathies'published at 09:31

    The inquest heard Jermaine Baker died from a single gunshot wound at 09:39 on 11 December.

    During the hearing the coroner expressed his "deepest sympathies" to the family, including Mr Baker's girlfriend Tia Demetrio who was in court.

    The case has now been adjourned, external and family and friends have left the court.

    The inquest has opened into the death of Jermaine Baker, who was shot by police in Wood Green.

    It has been told the firearms officer has asked for a second post-mortem to be conducted tomorrow on the 28-year-old's body. 

    A firearms officer has been arrested over the death.
