  2. Brother of lecturer killed in Morden: 'I'm still hoping it's a sick joke'published at 17:43

    The brother of University lecturer Daniel Young, 30, who was killed during rush hour near Morden on Tuesday, has paid tribute to him. 

    His younger brother Simon wrote on Facebook: "My Brother. My friend. I'm still wrapping my head round this, still hoping/wishing it's a sick joke. 

    "I can't possibly write everything I want to right now, its all too surreal.

    "I don't know what to feel, I'm frustrated, angry, upset, confused. 

    "Just so proud of everything you achieved in your life, places you travelled, friends you made.. you are inspirational, big Bro."

  3. Coming up on air: Transport for London could take over capital's rail servicespublished at 17:33

    Coming up on air at 18:30, BBC London's Karl Mercer has more on the proposals for the capital's rail services to be taken over by Transport for London. 

    The suburban routes currently run by train companies would be transferred when those contracts end. 

    More frequent trains with increased capacity could be a consequence of the move. 

  4. Enfield riot damage at centre of row between Boris Johnson and insurance companiespublished at 17:16

    A multimillion-pound compensation fight between London Mayor Boris Johnson and insurance companies after rioting in the capital in 2011 has reached the Supreme Court.

    Where the money to pay for compensation for damage caused to a Sony warehouse in Enfield should come from is at the centre of the row.

    Insurance companies say it should come from police funds, but Mr Johnson, who funds the Met Police, disagrees. 

  5. Severe traffic as Great Western Road closed due to roadworkspublished at 17:05

    The Great Western Road in Westbourne Green, west London, is closed and there is severe traffic in both directions between the A404 Harrow Road junction and the Elkstone Road junction due to roadworks. 

    And over at the other side of London, there is congestion between the A5201, Old Street in Shoreditch and the A11, Whitechapel High Street due to roadworks. 

    And there are minor delays on the Piccadilly Line between Kings Cross St. Pancras and Cockfosters, and between Acton Town and Uxbridge due to an earlier signalling problem at Holborn.  

  6. Marylebone to Oxford rail link to open in Decemberpublished at 16:28

    The first direct train service between Oxford city centre and London Marylebone will start in December, it has been announced.

    A new line connecting Oxford Parkway and the capital opened last October, with the city centre service planned for spring this year.

    Chiltern Railways said it still had to build a final section of track linking Oxford Parkway with the city centre.

    The first direct train service between Oxford city centre and London Marylebone will start in December, it is announced.

  7. Sadiq Khan 'shocked' at London's rise in violent crimepublished at 16:19

    Following the crime statistics released today, external, Labour’s candidate for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, says he was "really shocked" at the sharp rise in violent crime.

    He says: "The number-one job of any mayor it so keep the city safe, yet on this measure the current Tory mayor is clearly failing.     

    "Under the Tories, the number of police on the beat has been slashed and neighbourhood policing has been all but eliminated. 

    "London cannot afford four more years of Tory failure to keep our streets safe."

    Aslef, the Transport Salaried Staff Association and Unite have all suspended the Tube strike.

    But Rail, Maritime and Transport union reps will decide on Monday.

    The summons follows an inquiry finding the murder of ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 in the UK was "probably" approved by President Vladimir Putin.

    Regular readers will know that local collector, Eric Pemberton often sends postcards or interesting photographs about the Island which I feature on the blog.

    This week, Eric has sent a postcard that celebrates the arrival of Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia into London passing through Limehouse Reach  in 1954, external. This was the first time, the royal yacht had made its way up the Thames and was watched by hundreds of thousands of people all along the riverside. People living on the Island joined the crowds when the yacht made its way around the Isle of Dogs and into London.

    Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino says Selhurst Park, the venue for Saturday's London derby, is "difficult to go to" regardless of Crystal Palace's bad recent run, which has left them without a win in their last five league games.

    "Every game is different. We need to be ready to fight and not care about their last results," the Spurs boss says.

    The capital's rail services could be taken over by Transport for London under new proposals outlined today. 

    The suburban routes currently run by train companies would be transferred when those contracts end. 

    A new partnership between City Hall and the Government could lead to more frequent trains and increased capacity.

  13. Lambeth Council paid out £104m in compensation claims over two yearspublished at 14:42

    The London Borough of Lambeth paid out £5.3m in compensation between 2013 and 2015, says the TaxPayers' Alliance, external

    One of the payments by Lambeth, external, for £105,000 is for 'tree roots - street tree'. 

    Another two claims, each totalling £33,298 are for 'severe weather'. 

    The figures are part of research by the organisation which found more than £104m was paid out in compensation across the UK between 2013 and 2015. 

  14. Goldsmith welcomes plans for 'better connected Greater London'published at 14:17

    Zac Goldsmith, Conservative candidate for London mayor, has added his support to proposals to improve rail travel in poorly serviced areas of London.

    “Millions of people who live and work in Greater London rely on suburban rail services. Too often those services are not reliable or frequent enough because they’re not accountable to the people who actually use them. By giving the mayor the power over these services higher standards can be set and improvements delivered.

    “I have been working with Ministers on this issue as an MP and mayoral candidate and I strongly welcome this first step towards a better connected Greater London. “However, all of this progress will be put at risk if Sadiq Khan is elected. As a Transport Minister responsible for London, Khan made no attempt to make this happen, has made no attempt to talk to Ministers about this as an MP or mayoral candidate, and couldn’t work with Government to deliver it."

  15. Chelsea and Arsenal Football Clubs high on list of world's richest football clubspublished at 14:01

    Chelsea and Arsenal Football Clubs are in the top 10 on the list of the world's richest football clubs.

    Arsenal came in at number seven as it made £331m in revenue between 2014 and 2015.

    Chelsea was behind it at number eight, with £319m in revenue in the same time frame. 

  16. Watch: London's bike hire scheme heads eastpublished at 13:46

    They started off blue. Then they turned red... and now a select few have gone gold. 

    The mayor's cycle hire scheme is being extended eastwards and will now include the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at Stratford.

    Star of London 2012 Jessica Ennis-Hill was at today's launch as was the man responsible for developing cycling safety in the capital, Andrew Gilligan.
