  1. Mayoral candidate Khan criticises Tory budget 'without offering alternative'published at 15:46

    Labour's London mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan has criticised Boris Johnson's budget for London 2016/17 and claims it provides "no solutions for fixing the Tory housing crisis, reducing the cost of commuting or making London a Living Wage city".

    But not everyone is impressed with his response.

    Online publication MayorWatch is reporting Labour members on the London Assembly failed to offer an alternative, external despite repeatedly voicing opposition to the mayor’s policies.

    The Mayor's budget covers the Met, Transport for London, London Fire Brigade and other City Hall agencies.

    The Liberal Democrats too have criticised Labour's response, or lack of it.

    Caroline Pidgeon said: “Labour Assembly Members have let down Londoners in their abject failure to put forward any proposals to improve the Mayor’s budget. 

    “London desperately needs an Olympic effort to build new affordable homes and that can be done through converting the Olympic precept on council tax bills into a housing precept.

    “It is embarrassing that Labour are failing to back this initiative."

    Holocaust survivor Hannah Lewis has said she felt like Alice in Wonderland when she moved to London as a young girl in 1949.

  5. London set to hold World Track Cycling Championshipspublished at 14:34

    London will host the World Track Cycling Championships, external for the first time since 1904, it has been announced.

    Sport England, external hopes the event to be hosted in March will encourage more Londoners to get on their bike.

    More than £200,000 is set to be invested in the sport at a grassroots level as a result.

    The cast of the new Dad's Army film were all present and correct last night as the big-screen version of the sitcom had its world premiere in Leicester Square.

    So far it's received mixed reviews with The Independent's Sean O'Grady giving it a five-star rave, external, claiming Oliver Parker's film "surpasses the original" with its "exceptionally strong cast" but The Guardian called it "a waste of talent" in its two-star write-up, external.

  12. London rail passengers 'least satisfied with service'published at 12:30

    London rail passengers are the least satisfied nationally with the overall service they get according to a survey of 28,000 customers by the Office of Rail and Road, external.

    Nationally satisfaction rose for the first time since 2012 from 81% to 83%.

    But those using Thameslink, externalSoutheastern, external and Southern, external rated them at 73%, 75% and Southern 78%.

    The national stats dp need to be taken with a pinch of salt though, as while overall satisfaction has risen, commuters rated their satisfaction at 76%, compared with 85% for business travellers and 90% for passengers on leisure trips.

  13. Londoner author scoops top Costa Book prizepublished at 12:15

    A children's novel has been named Costa Book of the Year - only the second time in the prize's history.

    The judges said Frances Hardinge's Victorian murder mystery The Lie Tree would "grip readers of all ages" and awarded the Isleworth-based author £30,000.

    During her winner's speech she urged readers to explore the jungle of fictional books written for young adults and children.

    Crystal Palace have signed striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a free transfer until the end of the season.

    Adebayor, 31, was available after being released by Tottenham in September and has scored 94 Premier League goals for Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester City.
