    UK Sport believes Great Britain could win 79 Olympic medals at Rio 2016 and become the first nation to beat its tally as hosts of the previous Games.

    A final medal target will come in July, but it is likely to be in a range of 47 to 79.

    Team GB won a record 65 medals at London 2012 and 120 at the Paralympics.

  2. Lorry collides with wheelchair userpublished at 11:13

    A wheelchair user has been taken to hospital after colliding with a lorry at St George's Circus in Southwark, south-east London.

    Emergency services were called at about 08:15. The condition of the casualty is not yet known, police, external said.

    Three men who were once sentenced to life imprisonment alongside Nelson Mandela are to receive the Freedom of the City, external of London.

  6. Petition against Homeland star Lewis marking school celebrationspublished at 10:30

    Former pupils of a London comprehensive school have hit out at plans for the Eton-educated actor Damian Lewis to launch the school's anniversary celebrations.

    The Homeland star has agreed to switch on a laser display at Acland Burghley School, external in Camden to mark 50 years since it opened.

    But a petition has been launched urging the school to change its plans as the alumni claims Lewis, who does live locally, is an "inappropriate choice" and a better one would have been ex-pupils Ms Dynamite or Madness sax player, Lee Thompson.

    A new artwork painted by artist Banksy on the treatment of people in the Calais 'Jungle' camp has been removed from a site in Knightsbridge opposite the French Embassy.

    But Google got there first and managed to preserve it digitally.

    More than 150 students at University College London, external have gone on strike over the cost of their student accommodation and are demanding a 40% cut.

    Campaigners claim the cost of renting student accommodation has more than doubled since 2009. 

    The university said it's keeping costs as low as possible and it wants to talk to the striking students.

  11. London council prosecutes most people for disabled parking misusepublished at 08:45

    Hammersmith and Fulham Council prosecuted the most people of any authority in England between 2014 and 2015 over the misuse of disabled parking badges, it has been revealed.

    Councils in England took legal action against 985 people in 2014-15, the vast majority of them for using someone else's blue badge.

    Prosecutions across the country rose by 84% compared to the previous year.

  12. London will be Corbyn's 'lab rat' - PMpublished at 08:34

    David Cameron has urged Londoners not to elect Labour's Sadiq Khan as their next mayor, claiming they will become "lab rats" for party leader Jeremy Corbyn's economic experiments.

    Speaking at a rally for Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith, the prime minister warned about the dangers of a Labour victory for the capital's economy.

    Mr Goldsmith said his Labour rival was "Mr Corbyn's man" in City Hall.

  13. Third arrest over Morden commuter murderpublished at 08:23

    A third man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of university lecturer Daniel Young, 30, who was fatally stabbed as he made his way to work through Morden.

    Mr Young was on his way to the second day of a new job when he was stabbed near the Tube station during morning rush hour. 

    A 37-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon. Two other men, previously arrested, have been released on bail, the Met, external said,
