The Queen has opened a new enclosure at London Zoo for endangered lions.

Along with the Duke of Edinburgh, the 89-year-old monarch opened the Land of Lions exhibit, where four endangered Asiatic lions, also known as Indian or Persian Lions, will be kept.

But Maddy Taylor at the Captive Animals' Protection Society said the new enclosure was a "misuse of funds in the name of conservation".

She said: "Keeping animals in cages far away from their natural habitats does very little to help those species in the wild."

A 25-year-old man has died days after being stabbed at a residential address in Hotspur Road, Northolt, west London, on Saturday.

The man, who is yet to be named, died yesterday in hospital.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A bright meteor has been sighted in the early hours above Britain.

Witnesses have described the object as a green flash moving south to north for a few seconds, leaving a magnesium-white trail.

Sightings have been reported in locations including London, Surrey, Stafford and on the east coast of England at about at 03:16.

The Duchess of Cambridge broke with tradition today by staying at home with her children, leaving her husband to hand out shamrock to troops during a St Patrick's Day parade. 

Usually a female member of the Royal Family presents the Irish Guards with their traditional honour, but Kate, 34, was at home in Norfolk with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Instead the Duke, who is Colonel of the regiment, led the parade at Hounslow Cavalry Barracks in west London.

Haringey Council's not-for-profit lettings agency, which was set up in October to offer homes at a fair rent to locals, has only one property on its books.

The council has already spent £200,000 on setting up Move51⁰ North, external.

Labour mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan has promised to set up a London-wide agency along the same lines.

A Move51⁰ spokesman said the agency was "at the very early stages of setting up" and operating to target.

The single property appeared on the site shortly after the BBC contacted the agency.

A police officer told a Croydon nightclub owner to "change the music" in his venue and questioned why he had been playing drum and bass, an audio recording passed to the Advertiser shows, external.

The Conservatives are running the most "racially charged" campaign the capital has ever seen with their attacks on Labour's candidate for London mayor, a senior MP has said. 

Chris Bryant described the campaign against Sadiq Khan as desperate and divisive and suggested there was an element of religious prejudice against the Muslim MP. 

But the Tories hit back with Cabinet minister Chris Grayling accusing some elements of the Labour Party of anti-Semitism during last year's general election.

In exchanges during the business statement, shadow Commons leader Mr Bryant said: "I hope that you would also agree that all religious prejudice is equally despicable and would frankly disown the Tory campaign against Labour's candidate for Mayor of London, which is the most desperate, divisive and racially charged campaign London has ever seen.

"You should be ashamed."

Replying, Commons Leader Mr Grayling said: "Anti-Semitism has featured recently in a number of political activities and events and that is wholly and utterly unacceptable and should always be so. 

"But I simply remind you, you make a comment about the election in London today, I would also remind you that anti-Semitism was also present in elections a year ago, the general election in London, and not from our side of the political spectrum. 

"So I hope that you will take the words you said today and make sure they are properly put into root in your party."

 A stand-off between two of the lionesses over some lunch prompted the Queen to repeatedly glance behind her, as a loud roar interrupted the speeches. 

She then unveiled a large plaque to commemorate the opening, while the Duke joked to staff: "Where are you putting that?"

The jury have gone out in the trial of four men accused of plotting a drive-by shooting in London, inspired by so-called Islamic State.

Tarik Hassane, Suhaib Majeed, Nyall Hamlett and Nathan Cuffy all faced charges of conspiracy to murder and preparation of terrorist acts.

Medical student Hassane pleaded guilty during the Old Bailey trial, so jurors are considering verdicts on the others.

The alleged plot was possibly going to be carried out on a moped.

Mr Hamlett and Mr Cuffy have already pleaded guilty to supplying a Baikal self-loading pistol to Mr Majeed - a gun he admits he received, but which he denies knowing was intended for a terrorist murder.

The jury are considering one additional charge against Mr Majeed: whether or not he had possessed a firearm with intent to endanger life.
