    A new study by UK neuroscientists probes how the human brain navigates underground train networks.

    They find that we split the task into a hierarchy of different jobs, with different elements apparently handled in different parts of the brain.

    Particular parts of the cortex, for example, show greater activity if extra line changes are required; other regions simply become more excited as the overall goal inches closer.

    The work, a collaboration between Oxford University, University College London and Google's artificial intelligence firm DeepMind, appears in the journal Neuron, external.

    Abortion rates among women in London are higher than the rest of England, new figures reveal.

    Barking and Dagenham had the highest overall abortion rate, at 29 for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.

    Health bosses from the east London borough said they had worked hard to bring down teenage pregnancy rates.

    Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed wide regional variations.

  3. Travel: Accidents on Millbank and A41published at 08:33 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

    The A3212 Millbank is closed eastbound bewteen Vauxhall Bridge junction and the B326 Atterbury Street junction due to an accident.

    An accident on the A41 Southbound has blocked two lanes between Park Road Hendon and the North Circular Road due to an accident. There is congestion back to the Aerodrome Road junction.

    On the Tube, there are minor delays on the Victoria line because of an earlier faulty train at Stockwell.

  4. Man dies after explosion at flats in east Londonpublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

    A 30-year-old man has died and three others taken to hospital after an explosion at a block of flats in east London. 

    Detectives are investigating after the blaze badly damaged a flat on the second floor of a five-storey block on Stamford Hill, Hackney yesterday afternoon.

    The 30-year-old man was taken to a specialist burns unit in Essex but later died. 

    A 29-year-old man and two 28-year-old men remain in hospital. 

    More than 20 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade worked for two hours to get the fire under control.

    After a dull start in places, it will turn into a pleasant day with some sunshine. 

    The winds should remain light, making it feel rather warm in the sunshine. Cloud will however thicken from the west by the end of the day. 

    The maximum temperature will be 19C (66F).
