    The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of those who have lost their lives today, and everyone involved in this incident.

    "I am in close contact with the emergency services and Transport for London, who are working extremely hard under very difficult circumstances to get the situation under control and treat those who have been injured.

    “The police have set up a number for friends and family to call for information: 0800 0560154.”

    In a statement just released, the British Transport Police said: "We continue to work alongside our partners at the scene of a major incident in Croydon. 

    "We were called at 06:13 after a tram derailed near Sandilands tram stop. 

    "At present, we can confirm five people have sadly died following this incident. 

    "More than 50 others have been taken to hospital with injuries. Officers are continuing to work at the scene and Rail Accident Investigation Bureau are investigating the cause of the derailment. 

    "One person has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody. 

    "Anyone who is concerned about friends or relatives who might be involved in the incident can call the following number: 0800 056 0154.

    Council teams have been working throughout the morning to assist the British Transport Police and emergency services at the scene. BTP have advised that they will be setting up an information line for relatives and friends but in the meantime they are being asked to call 101. The council has also set up a reception centre for family, friends and people affected by the incident at the council offices, Bernard Weatherill House, Mint Walk.”

    The British Transport Police would not confirm what the tram driver has been arrested on suspicion of.

    A spokesperson said the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

    Mike Brown, London's Transport Commissioner, said: "All of our thoughts are with those who sadly lost their lives in this incident, those who were injured and the families of those affected. 

     "We are working closely with the emergency services on site and will continue to work with them during the investigation into what happened."

    We have no idea how it happened. What we have been told is that there is a steep, quite a bad bend so the tram may have derailed but at the moment that is all speculation.

    It’s unbelievable that this has happened; it’s unprecedented really since the tram opened in 2000. 

    We haven’t had an incident of this scale for some time.

    Peter McKenna, Deputy Director of Operations at London Ambulance Service detailed their response.

    He said 22 ambulance crews, 12 officers, and two advanced paramedic practitioners were sent to the scene, alongside the hazardous area response team.

    Two trauma teams from London’s Air Ambulance and a command support vehicle were also dispatched.

    “We have treated a number of patients at the scene and took 51 patients to hospital. Twenty were taken to St George’s University Hospital and 31 to Croydon University Hospital.

    “We remain on scene, supporting our emergency service colleagues as they deal with this incident.”
