    The tram appeared to have derailed at a point at which the track branches. 

    People living nearby told of hearing a loud noise and seeing the injured being carried off on stretchers. 

    Initial figures suggested 40 people had been hurt and five trapped, in what the Met police described as a "serious incident". 

    London Fire Brigade sent eight fire engines and more than 70 firefighters to the scene at Addiscombe Road. 

    Station manager Joe Kenny said: "Firefighters have released a number of people and two people remain trapped.

    "All the emergency services are working closely together to help those involved in this incident."

    Scores of emergency services are at the scene in Croydon where two carriages overturned at about 06:10 today.

    London Fire Brigade say 70 firefighters are at the scene. 

    Eight fire engines and four fire and rescue units, which contain specialist rescue equipment are at the scene.

    Through the trees we can just make out the overturned tram in Croydon, which injured 40 and trapped five people early this morning.

    Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "I am in contact with emergency services and TfL, who are working extremely hard to get the situation under control and treat those who have been injured.

    Hannah Collier, who lives near the Sandilands tram stop, filmed the scene shortly after it happened this morning. 

    She said she had been lying in bed watching the US election coverage when she heard a "big crash".

    Here's the latest statement from Transport for London: "We are currently working with the emergency services following a derailment  involving a tram in Croydon. 

    "There is currently no service on the tram between Reeves Corner and Addington Village / Harrington Road. We will give further information as soon as possible."

    As a result of this morning's tram accident, the A232 Addiscombe Road in Croydon is closed and traffic is queuing in both directions between the Park Hill Rose junction and the A215 Shirley Road junction.

    Buses - 64, 119, 194, 367, 466 and T33 - are all on diversion.

    The incident, involving a two-car vehicle, happened in a tunnel in south London, a Transport for London (TfL) spokesman said. 

    Police confirmed they were called to the scene at Sandilands tram stop in Croydon at around 06:10.

    Reports are coming in about a serious incident involving a tram in Croydon this morning.

    Hannah Collier, who lives near Sandilands Station where the incident happened at about 0615, said she was in bed watching the US election coverage and heard a big crash which she thought was wind.

    She told me she heard people shouting, emergency services and the road next to Sandilands station is closed.

    She says she can see countless police and ambulance and people are walking up the track/

    She can't say 100% that the tram has overturned but it has definitely derailed.

    Hannah said at least one person has been brought out on a stretcher.
