  1. Largest amount seized by Met in a yearpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2017

    More than £73m was seized by the Met in 2015-16, the largest total amount in a year.

    The force said the money came from assets such as properties, vehicles, jewelry and artwork.  

    The largest single value cash seizure was £943,000. The cash was found when officers stopped a black cab in east London and found a large holdall in the passenger compartment which contained the cash.

    The largest confiscation order made in May 2015 was to the value of £6,328,119.39. The criminality related to the supply of chip and pin machines to central London brothels.

    Funds forfeited and confiscated by the MPS are paid to the Home Office, which gives a proportion back to the force.

    London Fire Brigade took Southwark Council to court on four charges in relation to safety breaches at Lakanal House in Camberwell where a fire started after an electrical fault with a television.

    Southwark Council pleaded guilty to the charges at Southwark Crown Court. Stephen Walsh QC, for the London Fire Brigade, said: "It is of great importance that I make the point that this prosecution is concerned with the risks prior to the fire.

    "It is not alleged that the breaches were causative to the fatalities in the fire itself."

    The charges, dating from  1 October 2006 to 3 July 2009, include a failure to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, failure to take general fire precautions - including in relation to safety of employees - and a failure to ensure that premises are subject to a suitable system of maintenance.

    Designer Catherine Hickman, 31, who had been commissioned for work by the singer Bjork and whose work had been stocked in shops in New York, died in the blaze in July that year alongside Helen Udoaka, 34, and her three-week-old daughter Michelle. 

    Dayana Francisquini, 26, and her children, six-year-old Thais and Felipe, three, were also killed.

    Oliver Dearlove's heartbrokengirlfriend wept in court as she described the loss of her "Mr Right" from a single senseless act. 

    Claire Wheatley told how she received a text from the 30-year-old banker saying "Love you bub" just hours before he was fatally punched by Trevor Timon in the street.

    Miss Wheatley broke down in tears as she has paid tribute to her "kind and gentle" boyfriend at the Old Bailey. 

    The nurse said: "We are all familiar with the phrase 'a broken heart', but unless you have experienced some form of loss or sadness it is difficult to understand how this truly feels. 

    "On August 28 2016, I was unfortunate enough to learn its true meaning. 

    "The difference is my heart is not broken, it feels more like it has been obliterated.”

    "I think of Oli every morning when I wake and dream of him in my sleep.

    "I see him as a baby, a schoolboy and as the smashing young man he had become, such a gentle unassuming soul."

    Judge Mark Dennis QC told Timon : "This was a senseless death that occurred as a result of an act borne out of a flaw in your character which in the past has seen you display unnecessary violent conduct to others when, for reasons best known to you, you have become annoyed or wound yourself up."

    He said Mr Dearlove was no threat to him and the punch was an "unprovoked and gratuitous act". 

    The judge said: "Oliver Dearlove was a young man of fine character with a long and promising future ahead of him. His loss in such senseless circumstances has, as the court has heard, caused untold misery for his family and those close to him."

    A man has been jailed for killing a banker with a single punch.

    Trevor Timon, 31, admitted the manslaughter of Oliver Dearlove after he hit him following an argument in Blackheath.

    At the Old Bailey, he was jailed for six years with five years on licence.

    Heathrow Airport has reported stronger than expected passenger numbers. 

    The airport said passenger numbers rose to 75.7 million passengers in 2016, 1% up on a year earlier, as it reported a 4.8% increase in adjusted earnings in 2016 to £1.7bn.

    The financial results come a day after the House of Commons' Environmental Audit Committee warned the government is still not doing enough to demonstrate it can mitigate the environmental impacts of a third runway. 

    Air quality, carbon emissions and aircraft noise must all be given further attention before expansion goes ahead, it said.

    Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters are dealing with a blaze at a shop with flats above on Harrow Road in Westbourne Park.

    Part of the ground floor and extraction system is alight.

    Station Manager Sam Kazmanli who is at the scene said firefighters are working hard to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring buildings.

    He also advised local residents avoid the area if possible and close doors and windows.

    The Fire Brigade was called at 0845 GMT. Fire crews from North Kensington, Paddington, Kensington and West Hampstead fire stations are at the scene. 

    The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
