  4. RMT: 'We need urgent talks over role of guard'published at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2017

    The RMT has called for urgent talks with Southern rail over its plans for the role of the train guard. 

    The union has written to the managing director of the firm's parent company, Govia Thameslink. 

    In the letter the RMT's General Secretary, Mick Cash, says he wants the two sides to meet ahead of a union meeting on 28 February which is due to consider further strikes by its members. 

    Talks between the RMT and Southern broke down last week. 

    Earlier this week in a letter to union members, Southern said it was considering imposing individual sanctions should the RMT call further industrial action.

    Firefighters attended about 200 incidents related to high winds when Storm Doris hit the capital on Thursday, London Fire Brigade has revealed.

    The call outs included:

    • A woman was treated by paramedics after a tree collapsed onto a car in Purley
    • A woman was injured when a garden wall collapsed on Horns Road in Barkingside
    • A tree collapsed onto two houses on Duke Road in Chiswick
    • A tree collapsed onto two houses on Porthkerry Avenue in Welling
    • Hoarding fell onto three cars on Thessaly Road in Battersea
    • Roof ripped off a house on Beverley Gardens in Stanmore
    • Firefighters secured the Swedish flag that was in a precarious position at the Swedish Embassy

  8. Travel: Storm Doris still affecting trainspublished at 08:10 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2017

    Damage from Storm Doris is still causing disruption to many train lines in and out of London and passengers are being advised to check before they travel.

    Thameslink services between St Pancras International and Bedford, trains run by London Midland and services from Virgin Trains are among those affected.

    There is no service between Stanmore and Wembley Park on the Jubilee line because of a person on the track. There are also severe delays on the rest of the line.

    Late finishing engineering works between Balham and Norwood Junction is causing disruption to trains running through the area.

    A Kent surgeon should be banned from all medical practice if allegations that he carried out unnecessary operations for his own financial gain are found to be true, a Kent MP says.

    Gareth Johnson, who represents Dartford, says one of his own family members was treated by Mohammed Sait at the Fawkham Manor Hospital. 

    Tonight the private hospital itself is the subject of a damning inspection report - which highlights patients at risk of harm, poor standards of hygiene and most shockingly the wrong patient being taken to the operating theatre.
