  1. PM 'should invite residents to Downing Street'published at 08:58 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Labour's Harriet Harman wants the prime minister to invite residents of Grenfell Tower to Downing Street.

Theresa May was criticised after she failed to meet residents when she made a low-key visit to the scene on Thursday.

Ms Harman represents Camberwell and Peckham, where six people were killed in a fire at Lakanal house in 2009.

  3. Cladding 'not used elsewhere in Kensington'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    BBC Newsnight

Nick Paget-Brown, leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, told BBC's Newsnight that "no other towers" in the London borough have the same type of cladding as that used on Grenfell Tower.

The type of cladding used on the tower has come under scrutiny amid claims that more fireproof varieties are available.

Asked if the council will be using that particular type of cladding again, Councillor Paget-Brown said: "No."

  5. Justice for Grenfell rallypublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

A rally is being planned in Westminster tonight, calling for justice for those caught up in the Grenfell Tower fire.

  6. Grenfell Tower cladding: Green energy targets 'not to blame'published at 08:22 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Roger Harrabin
    BBC environment analyst

Some commentators ask whether green energy targets are to blame for the fire.

But campaigners for warm homes say the insulation policy is right – it’s the implementation that’s wrong.

That’s because insulation has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in cold damp tower blocks.

Comfort has improved, health is better, bills are slashed. Carbon emissions are down.

In fact insulation needs to be massively extended as the government strives to reduce fuel poverty and curb carbon emissions.

But engineers will need to use insulation that’s safe for tower blocks – and then prove to sceptical tenants that it is safe.

There will be questions over why regulators didn't ensure the right insulation was used for Grenfell Tower. Were they cost-cutting?

Meanwhile councils round the UK will face huge bills to ensure the safety of hundreds of renovated towers where residents will want to know if they are safe from fire.

  7. How one Grenfell Tower resident escapedpublished at 08:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Christos FairbairnImage source, Christos Fairbairn

One of the people who managed to escape the Grenfell Tower fire was 15th floor resident Christos Fairbairn.

The 41-year-old said: "I could see police outside and people just standing there. It felt like they were just watching me. Then I realised if I don't go I would die here.

"I wrapped a wet jumper around myself and ran out of the door with just the clothes on my back and my phone. The smoke was black and it was so hot and I couldn't breathe but I kept going.

"As I got to the third or fourth floor I was choking and couldn't breathe. I started to feel faint. I collapsed and that's when I felt a firefighter grab me.

"I went to hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation. I had so much poison in my lungs. I was crying and having flashbacks."

    BBC Breakfast

    Sajid Javid

Sajid Javid, the secretary of state for communities and local government, says the government "will do whatever it takes" to improve safety in tower blocks following the fire in west London which killed at least 17 people.

He told BBC Breakfast he wanted to reassure people living in similar tower blocks across the country, saying the emergency review will start straight away but will be informed by the fire investigation report into the fire at Grenfell Tower.

Mr Javid said he will be going to the area today and that he wants to make sure the council leading the recovery efforts is helped in every way possible.

Here are the most recent news updates on the Grenfell Tower blaze:

    • At least 17 people have died after a fire spread through the Grenfell Tower blaze on Wednesday morning. There are fears the death toll may exceed 60.
    • There is speculation that cladding put on the building during a renovation contributed to the blaze spreading through the 24-storey tower block.
    • The first victim of the fire was named as Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali, 23. He was in a flat on the 14th floor when the fire broke out.
    • Theresa May has confirmed a judge-led public inquiry will take place. The prime minister was criticised by some for not meeting residents or victims of the blaze.
    • Police and fire services have warned that the search for people's remains in the tower block could take weeks.
    • Police say they may not be able to identify all of the victims.

  11. 'Huge challenge' facing Maypublished at 03:22 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg has written of the "huge challenge" facing Theresa May's "fragile government".

"Any government trying to deal with a terrible event like the Grenfell Tower disaster needs sensitivity and nimbleness," she says.

"Ministers have a complicated 'to do' list - make sure help gets to where it is required, turn on the taps for emergency cash and show that it is willing and brave enough to work out how it could have happened, in order to give any credible answer to the common cry of 'something must be done'.

"But this government is already so fragile, facing pressure on many fronts, the PM still reeling from the election result only a week ago."

    BBC Newsnight

Chris Philp, Conservative MP for Croydon South, told Newsnight that Prime Minister Theresa May did not meet residents in Grenfell Tower during her visit to the scene on Thursday because she didn't want to "intrude" upon peoples' grief or "grandstand in front of the television cameras".

Mrs May has come in for criticism in some quarters for not meeting with residents and those affected, while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn did meet with victims.

    BBC Newsnight

Chris Philip, Tory MP for Croydon, says the cost of fitting sprinklers in Grenfell Tower would have been about £200,000. As the building recently underwent a refurbishment costing almost £9m, he says the decision not to install sprinklers was not about money.

"We need to make sure whatever happened in that building never, ever happens again," he said.
