Some of the residents of Grenfell Tower could be moved to other areas of London, the local authority has said.

A spokesperson for Kensington and Chelsea Council said: "While we will try to do our utmost to ensure those affected remain in or near the borough, given the number of households involved, it is possible the council will have to explore housing options that may become available in other parts of the capital."

On Friday, the council said 110 households have been given temporary accommodation.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has sent a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, demanding immediate action on a number of issues in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire:

    • Victim support and information for the families and friends of the missing. He said the lack of information means the community's grief "has been made worse"
    • The mayor also said there has been a lack of co-orindation in relief and support across Kensington. He added: "Some residents are still sleeping in the Westway Sports Centre."
    • The mayor also demanded that "a list of tower blocks" checked for safety after the Grenfell Tower fire be provided "by the end of today". He added a timeline for checking the remaining buildings should also be provided today.

Lily Allen said on Channel 4 news the number of deaths was significantly higher than reported in the media

Police say at least 30 people have died in the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in west London.

Singer Lily Allen was criticised on Thursday after saying she believed the real death toll was being covered up.

Rapper Akala, who has spoken up about social issues for years, also claimed the true number is being played down.

Many people on social media are speculating that the media "know" that the true number is much higher but are not publishing actual numbers.

The BBC understands as many as 76 people are missing, following the fire, which broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is up to the Metropolitan Police to release the number to the media and the public.

Media outlets report what is officially known as soon as they hear.

They want to be accurate. Speculating on a high fatality figure when there is no way to be absolutely certain of that number could cause problems, for example, by worrying the public.

The police also have a responsibility to be accurate. In this case, they have given an indication that they think the number will rise beyond 30 deaths - but they would not speculate on an exact number because the final death toll could be very different to anything they speculate.

  7. Fears for missing Bangladeshi family of fivepublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    BBC Monitoring
    The world through its media

International media have been reporting on the Grenfell Tower fire and fears for those still missing.

Bangladesh’s Daily Star, external newspaper reports that five members of a Bangladeshi family, who moved to Grenfell Tower just a year ago, are missing.

Kamru Miah, his wife Tanya, sons Abdul Hamid and Abdul Hanif and daughter Tanima, were trapped in their 16th floor flat, Kamru's nephew Abdur Rahim says.

Abdur says he last spoke to Kamru and Tanya at 02:30 on Wednesday, when Tanya said the family were trying to escape through a bathroom of the apartment but were unable to find a way out, and asked him to pray for them.

According to another relative, Tanima was due to get married on 29 July and had already completed all the preparations for her wedding.

This is the British Monarchy, in action, showing it has learnt from its mistakes of the past.

Mistakes that have included the significant time that elapsed before the Queen visited the site of the Aberfan disaster in the 1960s and the “Show us you care” newspaper headlines that were printed 20 years ago in the days following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

As Theresa May is learning to her cost, it is a tragedy with a growing political dimension. There is a howl of pain and anger being directed at an establishment which has the royals at its heart.

There’s the talk of the divide between rich and poor. The Queen’s grandson is a millionaire prince living in a palace in the same borough as Grenfell Tower.

In coming to the site, the Queen was acting as “Head of the Nation” – a focal point at a moment of considerable pain.

She was also providing her prime minister with a masterclass in how to respond on such occasions.

The prime minister visited the injured in hospital this morning.

  16. Requisition empty houses for homeless says Corybnpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Jeremy CorbynImage source, Getty Images

Empty flats in North Kensington should be "requisitioned if necessary" for people left homeless by the Grenfell Tower fire, Jeremy Corbyn says.

The Labour leader has also said he is "very angry" that so many lives were lost in the deadly tower block fire.

He told MPs on Thursday: "The south part of Kensington is incredibly wealthy, it's the wealthiest part of the country.

"The ward where this fire took place is, I think the poorest ward in the whole country.

"And properties must be found, requisitioned if necessary, in order to make sure those residents do get re-housed locally.

"It cannot be acceptable that in London you have luxury buildings and luxury flats kept as land banking for the future while the homeless and the poor look for somewhere to live."

Grenfell Tower is in a neighbourhood ranked among the most deprived 10% in England.

Just two miles away is 3 Merchant Square - a new 21-storey tower in Paddington Basin.

It's a different world. The penthouse apartment was sold for £7.5m. One-bedroom flats are at least £1m.

The gap between rich and poor

The average salary in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, where Grenfell Tower stands, is £123,000: the highest in the UK.

But the median average - the midpoint of all salaries in the area - is £32,700. No other local authority in the country has such a large gap between these two averages, pointing to a huge contrast between high and low earners.
