The Mayor of London has called for an interim report into the Grenfell Tower fire to be published this summer.

Sadiq Khan said there were "questions that demand answers", adding: "We can't afford to wait many years for those answers."

    Quote Message

One of the things the public inquiry will look into is the refurbishment of the tower blocks and whether the tower block was refurbished in a safe way. There are obvious questions about value for money and other questions that will be raised and other questions that demand answers. We can't afford to wait many years for those answers. Which is why I am today calling for an interim report to be published this summer.

  9. 'I hope the number of fatalities don't reach triple figures'published at 17:36 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Met Police Commander Stuart Cundy has provided an update on the identification of the Grenfell Tower victims.

He said of the 17 victims who are known to have died, six have been preliminary identified.

The absolute priority is recovery of anybody in the building but this can only happen when it is safe to do so, he added.

Mr Cundy said there was no suggestion the building will collapse but there were concerns over hazards in the building, with fires restarting.

"I really hope the number of fatalities does not reach triple figures," he said.

Mr Cundy said identifying the victims will be very challenging and they will use international disaster victim protocols which include dental records, fingerprints and DNA.

He rushed to the tower-block, spoke on the phone asking them to flee.

  18. Rudd: We must ensure a tragedy like Grenfell never happens againpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Evening Standard

    Amber RuddImage source, Reuters

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has urged people "not to rush to judgement" over the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Hailing the UK for having "some of the most rigorous fire safety regulations in the world", she stressed: "We need to establish how such a tragedy could have occurred in a major capital in the early 21st century."

Writing in the Evening Standard, external, she said: "Of course we need to know more about how this tragedy could have happened and there will be a full investigation.

"But at this early stage, with firefighters still picking their way through the debris, I would urge everyone not to rush to judgement. If there are lessons to be learned we will learn them."

She praised the bravery of the emergency services and conceded "these are challenging times" for Londoners, with "heartbreaking images of suffering" filling TV screens.

"My heart goes out to every person affected by this tragedy..." she said.

"We have to dig deep inside ourselves in order to keep going. But even in its darkest days, the spirit of London prevails."

Expressing her "deepest condolences" to those suffering "unimaginable grief", she writes that "history has shown us how strong London is".

"The shadow of this tragedy will stay with us forever — we will stay strong for everyone affected and not be afraid to ask vital questions to ensure this can never happen again."

  19. Harriet Harman: Public inquiry must not mean delaypublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Labour MP Harriet Harman has been speaking to the BBC after the Westminster Hall session earlier.

The former party deputy leader is an MP in the London borough of Southwark, where the 2009 Lakanal House fire killed six people.

She said tower blocks needed to be fitted with sprinklers and questions needed to be asked about whether refurbishing blocks could compromise fire safety - and whether the official "stay put" advice for people in burning buildings should be changed.

Of the public inquiry, she said:

    Quote Message

There doesn't have to be a delay. It's wrong if there is a delay because people are living in thousands of tower blocks all around the country and they need to know the lessons are going to be learned quickly."

She also said it was up to opposition parties to make sure the government "doesn't slip off the hook" in terms of providing resources to make sure buildings are safe.

  20. Mohammed 'bid his friend goodbye'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Mr Alhajali was with his older brother, Omar, in the flat but lost each other on the way out, says the Syria Solidarity Campaign.

His brother was rescued by firefighters while Mr Alhajali went back upstairs.

    Quote Message

Mohammed was on the phone for two hours with a friend in Syria, waiting to be rescued. He was trying to reach his family in Syria but he could not get connected to them due to the situation in Syria. He had not seen his family for four years. When the fire reached his flat on the 14th floor, Mohammed bid his friend goodbye, saying that the fire had reached him. He asked his friend to pass on the message to his family. We were expecting Mohammed and his two brothers at our Syrian Refugee Community Iftar in Chalk Farm this Saturday as part of The Great Get Together and Refugee Week. We will instead be paying tribute to Mohammed and all those who lost their lives in this tragic fire on Saturday. Mohammed undertook a dangerous journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the UK, in his own home. Mohammed came to this country for safety and the UK failed to protect him. We absolutely agree that a thorough investigation into Building Regulations should take place immediately.
