He added: "You do not hear of tragedies like this happening in private blocks...it's a scandal."

    Andy SlaughterImage source, Labour

Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter has said interim measures would be needed to ensure tower blocks were safe.

Welcoming the prime minister's announcement of a full public inquiry, the Labour MP said: "First, we do need that sense of urgency. We can have some provisional findings.

"People have raised issues to do with sprinklers; would sprinklers have stopped this fire spreading? Is cladding the issue here that led to the accelerated spread?

"It's a first world country where we have huge expertise in these areas, and it's just frankly unacceptable that we're still not implementing the lessons of Lakanal eight years ago, and indeed other fires."

"If you've stood at the bottom of that building and looked up, nothing you've seen on the TV can prepare you for what you feel when you look up at that devastation and the sense that you feel of the terror that must've been felt during that night, and the quite extraordinary, protocol-breaking bravery of firefighters who went in there.

"That shock has been very well articulated."
