Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer has explained the importance of the public inquiry announced by the Government.

Normally an inquest can only take place at the end of a criminal investigation but a public inquiry "can happen much more quickly in some circumstances", he told the Andrew Marr Show.

The former Director of Public Prosecutions (2008-13) was asked if both Labour and Conservative governments bore some of the blame for not investigating fire concerns about cladding on high-rise buildings. The issue was raised in a House of Commons report in 2000.

"All parties need to ask serious questions why recommendations in the past have not been implemented," he replied.

The leader of Kensington council, he's got a lot of questions to answer here. How he is in his job, particularly after what the Prime Minister said yesterday, saying they had basically failed the local people, I think he should be considering his position. They have failed their local people, it's absolutely abundantly clear on that.

The Sunday papers are, unsurprisingly, dominated by the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

The Sunday Times reports that the British Red Cross has drafted in to help victims of the blaze while senior staff at Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council have been told to stay at home.

Following a meeting with surviving Grenfell Tower victims at Downing Street on Saturday, Theresa May declared that the initial response was "not good enough".

Labour MP Ian Austin told the paper: "Isn't it a good job that we've got charities and aid workers read to step in when one of Britain's richest councils can't sort out its own mess."

The leader of Kensington and Chelsea council says he is "heartbroken"

Here is Nicholas Paget-Brown's statement in full...

    Quote Message

I am heartbroken by the tragic fire and the appalling loss of life at Grenfell Tower. This is a terrible and shocking event and my heart goes out to the victims, their families and friends and to the residents and wider community that have been affected. I have been over-awed by the strength, compassion and resolve of the residents and community in coming together to help the survivors and the friends and family of the victims. The emergency services, hospital staff, charities, and our own specialist teams have been working tirelessly to try and help all those affected. Kensington and Chelsea council is working closely with the government, charities, volunteer and resident groups and the emergency services to help re-house and assist all those affected. Of course, people rightly have questions about the causes of the fire and why it spread so quickly and these will be answered. Lessons must be learned from the Grenfell Tower fire and the government has launched a full public inquiry. I will cooperate in full with this and all other investigations. I feel deep sorrow for all those affected and will do everything I can do to help them repair and rebuild their lives."

    Nusul Islam

As anger mounts over the Grenfell Tower fire, many relatives are finding it hard to get the information they are desperate for. Nusul Islam told the BBC of his frustration at the official response.

His uncle, aunt and three cousins were on the 17th floor when the tower block caught fire early on Wednesday morning.

    He fears the worst.

On Thursday, Friday and again on Saturday, he drove to North Kensington from his home in Hertfordshire and joined the throngs of people walking the streets around Latimer Road.

But with no central place to go, and no-one obvious to ask, he has been left frustrated.

"There's no-one giving us information," he said. "There's no-one to talk to.

"It's just the charities. Where are the government officials, where are the council officials?"
