  17. London most expensive place to hold a funeralpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

Bereaved families are facing a growing "funeral cost postcode lottery", with a widening price gap between the most and least expensive locations, a report has found.

Across the UK, the average cost of a funeral is £3,757, the Royal London national funeral cost index found.

The gap between the average cost of the most expensive and least expensive locations has increased to over £4,500 this year, compared with £3,500 last year, the report found.

It said: "This all suggests the effects of the funeral cost postcode lottery are becoming more extreme."

Kensal Green in London was found to have the most expensive average funeral cost, at £7,489.

This was £4,539 higher than the average funeral cost in Belfast, at £2,950.

The index is published in partnership with the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM), which collected cremation and burial costs.

Two surveys of over 3,000 people in total across the UK were also carried out.

Here are the five most expensive locations for a funeral in the UK according to Royal London's research, with the average funeral cost:

    1. Kensal Green, London, £7,489

    2. Enfield, London, £6,143

    3. Beckenham, London, £5,636

    4. Southgate, London, £5,327

    5. Golders Green, London, £5,224

  18. Network Rail seeks partner to take on £1.bn digital dealpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

Network Rail is seeking a partner to take on a £1.8bn deal to transform Britain's railway.

The introduction of digital technology on the East Coast Mainline between London King's Cross and Peterborough by 2024 will be the country's first major inter-city deployment of ETCS (European Train Control System) signalling to boost capacity and reliability.

This will help make the ability to run trains at 140 mph - compared with 125mph today - a "much more credible proposition", Network Rail route programme director Toufic Machnouk said.

A technology provider will be appointed to work with the Government-owned company to develop a digital signalling system to run for 30 years.

The 100-mile stretch of track between London and Peterborough was chosen for the project because of a "once-in-a-generation alignment of opportunities", according to Mr Machnouk.

  20. Commissioner insists crime in London has 'stabilised'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 5 September 2018

The Metropolitan Police's commissioner says police are "determined" to drive-down crime despite fears that violence in the capital has not stabilised.

Earlier today the London Assembly police and crime committee met representatives from the Metropolitan Police and the deputy mayor for policing and crime, Sophie Linden.

Commissioner Cressida Dick last month told the assembly that violent crime had "stabilised" but Liberal Democrat London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon raised concerns that this was not the case.

Ms Pidgeon said: "It seems that violence has risen, how do you suggest it has stabilised?

"We want reassurance for Londoners. Children are going back to school, and people are worried about their communities."

Ms Dick said that month on month since 2014 there has been an increase in crime, but police are now seeing a fall in different types of crime such as knife crime victims under the age of 25 and gun discharges.

Assembly members were told by Ms Dick that gun crime had also gone down by 50% over the last four months, but added: "It is still high, and I want it to be driven right down, I am determined to do that."

Met statistics show knife crime went down by 22% from May to June this year.

Ms Dick also assured the panel that the violent crime taskforce - which was set-up in April - was helping to reduce violent crime.

She said: "They are operating at full capacity and doing a good job."

Since the taskforce was launched, Ms Dick said it has carried out more than 1,900 weapons sweeps and recovered more than 250 knives, 200 offensive weapons, and 27 firearms.
