  2. Singer from Lambeth wins busker of the yearpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    A songwriter from Lambeth has been crowned winner of London's biggest busking competition.

    Laky became Gigs Champion in the Mayor of London’s annual busking competition.

    The 24-year-old, also scooped top prize in the ‘soloists and duos’ category.

    Also known as Kyla Stroud, Laky has been performing live since she was 15.

    This year saw the 10th grand final of the take place at Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush.

    Other winners were Josh Brough from Chelmsford, who won the youth category, and Nicola Hogg from Haringey, who wowed the judges in the ‘open’ category.

    Buskers competed across three categories to win prizes worth £15,000, including studio time, paid gigs and musical equipment.

    Deputy Mayor for Culture, Justine Simons, said: "So many talented musicians have cut their teeth with us and gone on to great things.

    "Music is deeply embedded in our city’s history and culture, and live music brings our streets to life for the benefit of all Londoners.”

  5. Woman dies in Edmonton house firepublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    A woman has died in a fire in Edmonton.

    Firefighters were called to a house, converted into flats, on Chalfont Road just after 22:30 yesterday.

    The fire was under control by midnight but one woman who was rescued from the first floor was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The staircase from the ground to the first floor were destroyed as a result and part of a flat on the first floor were damaged by the blaze.

    The Metropolitan Police and the fire brigade are investigating the cause.

    Dozens of council housing estates in London have been slated for redevelopment, raising concerns that social housing will not be replaced.

    More than 31,000 residents will be affected in 118 sites undergoing or facing regeneration.

    Campaigners say the schemes are forcing many people out of their communities.

    London Mayor Sadiq Khan has told councils they must now ballot residents on regeneration plans to secure City Hall funding.

    Of the estates to be regenerated, more than 80 will be fully or partially demolished, according to council responses to a BBC freedom of information request.

    There is a one-hour delays on Greater Anglia southbound into Liverpool Street from Hertford East and Stansted Mountfitchet, due to signal problem and points problem. This also affects Stansted Express.

    There is disruption on trains including cancellations on Southern trains between Redhill and Tonbridge, and Reigate and Victoria because of a shortage of crews.

    There are delays of 20 minutes on Great Northern between Kings Cross and Cambridge because of late finishing engineering works.

    Borough Station is exit only because of a broken lift.

    Thameslink and London North Eastern Railway are delayed for 20 minutes between Kings Cross and Stevenage.
