  4. Investigation into 'poor' recycling rates in Lambeth urgedpublished at 16:46 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

    Recycling

Lambeth Council’s opposition leader has called for an “urgent” investigation into the borough’s recycling rates.

This comes after Lambeth Council recycled 30% of the borough’s household waste in 2017/18 – an increase on 28.8% from 2016/17.

But the council’s recycling, reusing and composting target for this period was 49% in 2016/17 and 50% in 2017/18.

Cllr Jonathan Bartley said the council needed to scrap garden waste collections, introduce food waste collection on estates and improve the availability of information about recycling.

“As the urgency about the action needed on climate change has grown, and awareness about the need to tackle the plastics crisis has grown Labour-led Lambeth Council has shown staggering complacency when it comes to recycling,” he said.

“It has been missing its own targets for over six years but it hasn’t even looked into why its recycling rate is so poor, let alone updated its waste strategy over this period.

“It should urgently investigate the reasons why its rates are so low.

But Lambeth Council is committed to increasing recycling rates, cabinet member for environment and clean air, Cllr Claire Holland, said.

“We are committed to working in partnership with our waste contractor Veolia to improve the waste services offered to residents in the borough and to increase the amount that is recycled,” she said.

The council replaced clear recycling sacks with green wheelie bins which pushed recycling rates up to 31.4% in April 2018, she said.

  7. Woman sought over £1,500 damage to cabpublished at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

Detectives have today issued an appeal for information and witnesses after two women caused more than £1,500 worth of damage to a private hire cab they were travelling in.

At around 04:00 on 22 June, two female passengers were travelling in a cab - a white Toyota Prius - from Peters Street, Soho to St Paul Street, Islington.

An argument broke out between the passengers and the driver, after the driver asked them to get out of the vehicle as they had cancelled the trip.

The two women refused for a prolonged period of time, before getting out at Pentonville Road, where they caused damage to the vehicle by banging on it and pulling the front and rear window wipers.

The driver reported the incident to police shortly after, at which point both women fled the scene.

A 39-year-old woman was interviewed under caution by appointment on 9 September.

Police now wish to identify the second female (pictured), who is believed to have caused most of the damage to the vehicle.

She is described as a white female, aged between 20 to 30 years, with blonde, shoulder-length hair. At the time of the incident she was wearing a dark-coloured leather jacket.

She is believed to have an Australian accent.

  8. 'Symbolic' Christmas tree felled destined for Londonpublished at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

Trafalgar Square is set to receive a "Disney-like" Christmas tree from Norway after a 71-year-old annual tree-felling ceremony.

The now traditional tree is a symbol of gratitude from the Norwegian capital Oslo for Britain's assistance during the Second World War.

Standing at 21 metres high, the Mayor of Oslo described this year's gift as "very symbolic" as it started growing just around the time the war began.

The ceremony in the forest of Normarka, just outside Oslo, was attended by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Lindsey Hall, who said both countries had their own idiosyncrasies, which the UK is "trying to square off with Brexit".

This morning, the Norwegian Spruce was cut by both mayors in front of an audience of carol-singing schoolchildren.

Mayor of Oslo Marianne Borgen said: "This is an ordinary tree from an ordinary wood near to Oslo - so this is not a Disney tree even if it looks like a Disney tree.

"It smells beautiful and we think it's 80 years old so it started to grow during the Second World War - which is very symbolic.

"Our forester is very, very competent and they chose this tree around 20 years ago."

The tree is set to be transported to London and its lights will be turned on at a ceremony on 6 December.
