A new skyscraper could join the growing line-up of towers on London’s skyline to become the capital’s second tallest.

The Tulip could be the latest to join the likes of the Gherkin, Shard and Walkie Talkie in the capital’s cluster of skyscrapers.

At 305.3 metres tall, it would be the second tallest building on the City of London’s Square Mile turf, but will be a visitor and tourist destination only.

It would measure just 3 feet shorter than the capital’s tallest tower, The Shard, and loom above the second highest, One Canada Square at Canary Wharf.

The planning application for the Tulip by architects Foster + Partners, the designers behind the neighbouring Gherkin.

If approved by City planners, the Tulip, which would feature no office space, would overtake the under-development One Undershaft as the Square Mile’s tallest tower.

The planning application has been made to the City of London Corporation, which governs the Square Mile financial district.

  20. Drop-in health clinics after Grenfell 'soil contamination'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Drop-in health clinics are being held in North Kensington for people concerned about reports of suspected soil contamination after the Grenfell Tower fire.

The clinics were set up after residents demanded action from the council at a packed public meeting following revelations that the soil in the area of the tower could contain contaminants such as asbestos after the tragic blaze.

At the meeting, fire chemistry and toxicology expert Professor Anna Stec said she suspected there could be contamination, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The University of Central Lancashire academic has done tests at sites in north Kensington near the remains of the tower, but full results of her research are not yet available.

North Kensington residents described a range of health concerns including breathing problems, migraines, stress and an illness known in the area as “the Grenfell cough”.

They also said they were worried about any risk of asbestos.

The NHS is urging people with health concerns following last year’s fatal fire to go to its advice clinics.

The clinics run from 18:30 to 20:30 at the Hilton Hotel in Holland Park Avenue today and on Wednesday 28 November.
