A man who exposed himself to a teenage girl on a bus after she refused to give him her phone number is being sought by the police.

The 14-year-old victim, who was wearing her school uniform, was travelling on the route 473 bus on Plaistow Road, heading towards Stratford on Wednesday 12 September at 15:13 BST.

She was sat on the top deck when a man approached her asking for her phone number. After she told him her age and asked him to leave her alone, he stood up and exposed himself to her.

The girl then ran downstairs before the suspect got off the bus at Paul Street.

He is described as a black man, aged in his 40s, around 5ft 10ins tall, with a gold bottom tooth.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a blue checked shirt, a black bomber jacket and dark-coloured trousers.

  2. Knife crime: 'Tsar' needed to stop stabbings, says ex-Met chiefpublished at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

    Lord Hogan-Howe

A knife crime tsar must be appointed by government in order to "get a grip" on the rise in youth violence, a former Metropolitan Police commissioner says.

Lord Hogan-Howe said a 93% rise in the number of under-16s stabbed over five years was a "terrifying statistic" and "something has to change".

It comes after two 17-year-olds were killed in separate incidents in London and Greater Manchester at the weekend.

The home secretary will meet police chiefs this week to discuss the issue.

The Prodigy star Keith Flint has died aged 49.

He was found dead at his home in Dunmow, Essex, on Monday morning.

The Prodigy, one of the most successful bands of the 90s, met at an open-air rave in 1989; where Flint approached DJ Liam Howlett and asked him for a mixtape.

The Prodigy released a statement, external confirming the news, saying: “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”

The band's third album, Fat of The Land, went to number one in both the US and UK, selling several million copies worldwide.

During this period Flint had stepped up as a frontman, lending his vocals to many of the band's biggest hits - including rave-rock anthem Firestarter.

In a statement, Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man at an address in Brook Hill, North End, just after 8.10am on Monday, March 4.

"We attended and, sadly, a 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Social media apps are increasingly likely to be used by young people to buy illegal drugs, research suggests.

The study, from Royal Holloway, University of London, says drug users valued the convenience and speed of buying drugs via apps like Snapchat.

It warns that buyers are at risk in terms of personal safety and drug quality and that many have a "false security" of escaping law enforcement.

It says educating young people about the risks is "crucial and urgent".

  6. Safety concerns raised 30 years after fatal rail crashpublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

Trade unions have marked the 30th anniversary of a fatal train crash by accusing train companies of "starting to think more about performance than safety".

Five people were killed and 88 were injured when a train to London Victoria went through a red light and crashed into another service at more than 60mph in Purley, south London, on 4 March 1989.

One of the trains careered down an embankment into gardens below, trapping people on board for several hours.

The crash happened only months after a train crash near Clapham Junction station killed 35 people.

Today the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) general secretary Manuel Cortes said the rail industry owes it to the family and friends of those who died at Purley to "ensure safety remains paramount in all we do".

He added: "There can be no going back to the bad old days of Purley and Clapham. Sadly though we have seen in recent times the spectre of train operating companies starting to think more about performance than safety.

"The best way of eradicating that risk and really learning the lessons of the past would be to remove the profit motive from our railways and return the network to public hands."

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan added: "The report into the recent Waterloo derailment suggests that many lessons of the past have not yet been learnt.

"We have a safe railway but we cannot, and should not, ever be complacent."
