Call for girls to be taught tech skills from early agepublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 23 April 2019
A leading female figure in the technology sector has called for girls to be encouraged to get into tech subjects from a young age.
Speaking at the launch of London Tech Week, external, the event's managing director Carolyn Dawson said the lack of diversity in the sector could be traced back to children's education.
“There’s still this perception, even from parents, that science, computing and STEM topics aren’t really for girls. So from such an early age it’s almost discouraged," she said.
According to a 2018 report, external, only 14.6% of senior UK tech leaders are women and 70.5% of senior executive teams have no BAME members at all.
Ms Dawson said London Tech Week was committed “not only to lead the way in tech innovation, but to tackle head-on the issue of diversity in the industry”.
The event runs from 10-14 June.
