Waterloo station passenger on phone in front of locked gates

By the time commuters get to Waterloo, it’s already too late.

Nearly everyone I’ve spoken to has come into London unaware a strike is happening. But they know now.

The Tube strike means they’re late, they’ve missed their connection or lost a meeting.

London’s busiest railway station is a major hub for travellers coming from the south of England and then taking the Tube onwards.

Many people here live outside of the London news bubble.

Support for the industrial action is split. Some feel the action is unjustified and makes it harder for working people.

Others say they understand why workers want to make their voices heard through a strike. One couple told me they’re “ambivalent”.

The only thing connecting everyone I’ve spoken to is they’ve now got to run to get anywhere on time.

  2. Music fans affectedpublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2022

Musician Ron Sexsmith is performing at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea tonight

Although it's near Sloane Square, like most stations on the network, it's closed leaving many fans expecting a challenge to get there.

  3. Different feel to Tuesdaypublished at 11:31 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2022

There's a fairly big crowd waiting around to my right waiting for buses.

To my left, there is a line of about 30 people waiting for taxis but the good news is taxis are also quite plentiful and are coming through often enough, so that the queue is moving quite fast.

It does feel very different to Tuesday's strike. For starters, the weather is much better - Tuesday was miserable - and it also does feel like people are more aware that this action is taking place, and they are staying home.

However, we're not sure there definitely won't be more strikes in the future.

He says the Tube strike made his journey difficult as he had to use the London Overground and buses instead of the Tube.

He said: "It has made me late. It normally takes about an hour, but today it's over two hours. I was aware the strike was happening, but I still need to get to work.

"I'm not sure what it's about, but I'm sure they deserve to be treated fairly."

Rejoice is taking her grandson to school this morning but is one of many who has watched buses sail past her stop due to overcrowding in White City, in West London.

The 56-year-old, who works in a nursery, says: "It has been a bit horrendous. I had to leave extra early today because the roads are jam-packed. Traffic is horrendous.

"When the bus is full and drives past you, you have to walk to the next stop where you know a lot of people might get off, just to try and get there."

    • Chiltern Railways have no service between London Marylebone and Aylesbury (via Amersham)

    Bus in Willeseden

"I can't get on a bus because they're all packed. I've had to walk here."

Waiting at the bus stop outside Willesden Junction station in north-west London is Dee.

She works in healthcare and is travelling from Hammersmith to Wembley.

What would normally be an easy journey to her workplace has been "horrendous" this morning.

Dee says the buses are so busy she hasn't been able to get on one and walked the journey so far.

She said she disagrees with the striking Tube workers.

She said: "I'm sure they have their children out there packing up the buses so if they're going to strike, they need to keep their family indoors and not pack up the buses, so other people can get on."

Some of you have been getting in touch with us via email- and it's fair to say support for the RMT union is thin on the ground.

Gerald White says: "I am flying out of Heathrow early today, returning to the US.

"To ensure I made my flight, I took a room at an airport hotel and bought a terminal shuttle bus ticket at a total cost more than £120. Most disappointing."

Jacqui Elmer writes: "Shame on you all who decided now was a good time to do this. How dare you strike at a time people are fighting to save their lives and country.

"You are stopping people being able to reunite or travel to assist. You should all be thoroughly ashamed - how selfish can you be! Unbelievable."
