Ashwood Hotel in Preston said it has taken in a number of rail passengers who decided to ditch the queues for replacement buses and rescue trains.

Tracy Bamber said they have welcomed several guests who were caught up in the rail chaos at Preston railway station caused by damage to overhead lines.

"They decided they didn't want to queue so booked in to stay overnight instead."

She added the hotel was now fully booked.

Comedian Ro Campbell has had "the worst rail journey ever - and I travel everywhere on the train".

The comic was returning to Edinburgh after a gig in London and said it was "bedlam" at Preston station.

He said when he saw the "massive" queues, he decided to go to the pub before deciding to book in a hotel near the station.

" he said.

"A lot of other people took refuge in the pub, too, and I spoke to people who had been stuck on trains for eight hours."

Passenger Jessica Edwards set off at 9:30 GMT to travel via train from London to Glasgow for work, but her journey has faced major delays and she was forced to disembark at Preston station at 12:45 and travel via bus.

She said:

She then had to board a train from Carlisle to Glasgow to reach her final destination.

But despite the disruption across the rail network, she said everyone has remained “really calm” and there were "lots of people queuing in a very British way".

The Caledonian Sleeper service between London and Scotland has been cancelled due to the overhead line issues.

A quarter of a mile section of overhead cabling has been damaged causing severe delays to trains around Preston, said Network Rail.

It said it was hopeful the repair work will be completed overnight.

Passengers stranded in Preston have faced long delays to get a replacement bus.

One passenger tweeted, external that she had been in a queue for 90 minutes.

Other stations on the West Coast Main Lane have been impacted by the issues.

Passengers have been queuing at Oxenholme for replacement bus services.

Virgin Trains, Northern and TransPennine Express have updated passengers with the extent of the disruption to their services.

All three firms have advised passengers not to travel, but have also given information about services which may be available.

Virgin Trains said tickets were being accepted on LNER services between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh, ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and CrossCountry between Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh.

Northern said a limited service was in operation between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness, while bus replacements are running between Preston and Lancaster and between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness.

TransPennine Express said bus replacement services were in place between Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Ticket acceptance has been agreed with TransPennine Express and Virgin Trains between Manchester, Preston and Lancaster on any reasonable route.

Simon Mabon, from Lancaster, was travelling from Macclesfield to Lancaster, a journey that should have taken about 90 minutes.

It ended up taking about eight hours.

When he finally arrived at Lancaster, he kindly spoke to BBC News.

Virgin Trains said rescue locomotives were sent to retrieve two trains and British Transport Police shared video of one of them in action.

One passenger said there was a "bit of a mutiny" on a train stranded in between Preston and Lancaster.

"There were quite a few people shouting because there have been no toilets and it is quite cold... and no lighting for about four hours," said Russ Dank, who set off from Euston at 07:30 for a board meeting in Lancaster.

He said some people were "kicking off" as there was nowhere to go to the toilet, but those who were desperate were allowed to go on the "line side" which wasn't "great circumstances".

He said the train came to a stop outside Preston at about 10:00.

Mr Dank who was in first class said he could hear passengers in the standard coaches complaining they were unable to buy food or drink as the shop's card machine was not working.

He said he was going to head to Leeds for the night.

The following routes have been affected after a cable broke on the route between Lancaster and Preston, a spokesman for Trainline has said.

• Northern between Manchester Airport and Barrow-in-Furness / Windermere
• TransPennine Express between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
• Virgin Trains between London Euston / Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

The overhead power lines came down not far from Bay Horse, a tiny hamlet between Lancaster and Preston.

A Network Rail spokesman has apologised to passengers affected by the lengthy and ongoing closure of the West Coast Main Line between Preston and Lancaster.
