    Disadvantaged young people from across Merseyside and Cheshire who have managed to turn the lives around are being honoured in Liverpool tonight. 

    The Prince's Trust Celebrating Success Awards - presented at St George's Hall later - recognise those who have overcome issues such as abuse, drug addiction, homelessness and depression.

  4. 'Distressing' number of families with children registered homeless, says MPpublished at 09:36

    Birkenhead MP Frank Field has described new figures showing an increase in the number of Merseyside families with children registered as homeless as "distressing and alarming".

    The numbers are up from 279 last year to 305 this year - with the biggest rises in Sefton, Liverpool and St. Helens.

    Mr Field - who chairs the region's Child Poverty and Life Chances Commission - believes cuts to Housing Benefit and problems accessing emergency payments may be to blame.    

  5. Liverpool to be home to UK's 'largest' Christmas treepublished at 09:25

    Liverpool will be home to the UK's tallest Christmas tree, a spokeswoman for Liverpool ONE claims.

    This year's festive centrepiece is a metal structure which will stand 30 metres tall on Paradise Street, near to John Lewis.

    The 23-tonne Christmas tree is being built using a 12-sided steel cone, 280 heart lights, 314 light rods and more than 2,000 metres of cabling to supply the power to illuminate the giant structure.

  8. Police chiefs threaten legal action over funding reformspublished at 08:23

    Merseyside's police and crime commissioner is among six threatening the Home Office with legal action over the changes to the way police forces in England and Wales are funded.

    Under the system, factors including the number of jobless households and the number of bars in an area would contribute to determining how much money each force is allocated.  

    The group, which includes Merseyside's PCC Jane Kennedy, has written to the government arguing the proposals are "deeply flawed".

  9. Travel: Disruption on M56 in Cheshirepublished at 08:13

    There are two incidents on the M56 this morning.

    Eastbound at junction 14 at the A5117 Hapsford traffic is slow due to an accident.  

    And westbound a rolling road block and a car fire are causing disruption between junction 11 at the A56 for Preston Brook and junction 12 for the A557 at Runcorn.
