  3. Knowlsey leisure services to be taken over by new companypublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Leisure services in Knowsley – including swimming pools and sports pitches – will be run by a new not-for-profit organisation.

    All of the current services will remain the same, a Knowsley Council spokeswoman said, adding that they would operate under a new company called Volair from April.

    The change follows a council review after funding cuts from the government.

    A policeman who engaged in a sexual act with a prostitute while on duty has been jailed for more than twoyears.

    Sgt David Andrew Gibson, 43, was found guilty of misconduct in public office after a trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

    It follows an investigation by Merseyside Police’s anti-corruption unit and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

    A grey seal which was stranded on a West Kirby beach on Thursday has died.

    The 100kg mammal is thought to have been stranded on Hilbre Island beach after the recent storms and rough seas.

    He was taken to the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Cheshire, where his health deteriorated and he died a few hours later.

    Liverpool John Lennon Airport says services are getting back to normal after a fire scare in the control tower led to the evacuation of the building and suspension of all flying operations.

    The alarm came after there was a smell of burning in the tower. 

    The airport's specialist teams checked the building and gave the all clear, Merseyside Fire and Rescue said.

    A man wanted on recall to prison who taunted police with social media posts telling them "catch me if you can" is back behind bars.

    Convicted criminal Steven Johnson had been wanted since January 2014 after breaching the terms of his parole.

    Police believe the 40-year-old went to Spain, where he posted Facebook and Twitter messages challenging officers to find him - which they did. 

    He was arrested in Whiston, Merseyside, on Thursday and returned to jail.

    A plan to redevelop Liverpool's historic Welsh Streets has been approved by councillors, but what are the Welsh Streets?

    • The Welsh Streets is an area of around 450 terraced houses next to Liverpool’s Princes Park.
    • They were built in the late 19th Century when there was an influx of Welsh people who came to Liverpool to work as dockers. 
    • The Toxteth streets are named after Welsh towns, villages and valleys.
    • Beatles drummer Ringo Starr used to live at 9 Madryn Street.

    Eight men and four women have been arrested by police investigating a disturbance in which a petrol bomb was thrown at officers outside a club.

    Merseyside Police earlier raided 10 homes in the Anfield area of Liverpool.

    Four officers were treated for minor burns after Tuesday's incident outside the Dockers Club in Townsend Lane.

    A rapid response team has been set up at the Countess of Chester Hospital to care for patients discharged early from hospital in their own homes.

    It's a scheme set up in an attempt to save the NHS money, after an independent review found delays in discharging patients could be costly.

    Merseyside Police has released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with a bike theft in Maghull.

    The 16-year-old owner of the bike had left it unlocked next to trolleys outside the Co-Op Late Shop on Deyes Lane on 11 January.

    When he returned five minutes later he saw a person riding off on his bike towards School Lane.

    Test drilling will not take place in a field near Chester where anti-fracking protesters camped for 20 months, energy company IGas has said.

    Protesters camped in a field on Duttons Lane in Upton, where IGas has planning permission to test drill to see if coalbed methane can be extracted. 

    Campaigners, who feared drilling could lead to fracking, were evicted by bailiffs and police last month, but now IGas says the results of a seismic survey do not meet its criteria and it will now return the site to its former state.
