    Liverpool Football Club has fallen into the red despite posting record revenue.

    The £19.8m pre-tax loss for the year to May 2016 was largely due to cost of signing big-name players and a payoff for Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked as manager in October 2015.

    Liverpool signed 12 players in the period, spending £32m on striker Christian Benteke, who has since left, and £29m on Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino.

    Revenue rose £3m to £301m.

    A section of a trackside wall "loaded with concrete and cabins by a third party" fell, blocking all four lines into the station, Network Rail said.

  8. Limited rail services after Liverpool Lime Street station wall collapse published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    There are limited services running on trains between Manchester and some Liverpool stations after a wall collapsed at Lime Street.

    A section of trackside wall "loaded with concrete and cabins by a third party" fell, blocking all four lines into the city centre station, Network Rail said.

    The collapse yesterday evening left rubble strewn across the tracks and overhead wires damaged.

    Northern Rail said a limited service is now running at stations, including Huyton and Liverpool South Parkway.

    Services between Liverpool and London will start and terminate at Runcorn with rail replacement buses between the town and the city centre, a statement from Virgin Trains said.

    Eleven people have been charged following police raids in Liverpool and St Helens yesterday.

    The ten men and one woman have been charged with offences relating to the supply of Class A drugs.

    They are due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court later.

    Engineers are assessing the damage this lunchtime but Network Rail expect no services to run in or out of Lime Street for several days.

    Union leaders have welcomed a review of plans which would have seen some permanent firefighters in Ellesmere Port replaced with on-call staff.

    There had been warnings the proposals would have increased attendance times and preventable deaths.

    There will also be a review of staffing at Birchwood Fire Station in Warrington. 

    Cheshire Fire Service insists the safety of the public and firefighters is "paramount".

    Residents are being urged to unplug electrical appliances after an underground fire broke out in Wirral.

    It began under tarmac near to an electrical grid in Old Chester Road, Birkenhead, last night.

    Engineers made the area safe by 23:30.

    Nearby residents are being urged to unplug items.

    Liverpool has offered to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after hosts Durban admitted it might not be able to afford it.

    South Africa's sports minister Fikile Mbalula said the government had been forced to have a rethink due to  financial restraints .

    Liverpool,  which is bidding to host the 2026 games , has now offered to step in if Durban cannot host.

    The Commonwealth Games Federation will make the final decision over Durban.

    Rail users are facing days of major disruption after a wall collapsed on to tracks between Liverpool Lime Street and Edge Hill stations.

    Passengers are being advised to find alternative routes.

    Liam Robinson, chairman of the Merseytravel Committee, is asking for "patience" while engineers "work to return the service to normal".

    Commuters and travellers are being urged to seek alternative routes after a wall collapsed onto tracks near Lime Street Station.

    A Network Rail spokesman said: "Early indications suggest train services will not resume for several days while extensive clear up and repairs take place to make the location safe."

    Engineers will make a detailed assessment of the damage later, but have indicated the line may not re-open until Monday 6 March.
