  7. A Clockwork Orange's stage music 'used for first time in UK'published at 10:34 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

Burgess adapted his novel for the stage in 1986, 24 years after it was originally published and 15 after it was propelled into the public eye by Stanley Kubrick's film version.

Violent and dystopian, the story follows teenager Alex in his incessant drive for enjoyment at all costs - and the punishment he receives as a result.

While adapting it for the stage, the Mancunian polymath also wrote songs and music - which Liverpool's Everyman Company will include in their production.

Director Nick Bagnall said it will help create "a real ‘horror show’ of a night for our audience".

    He said:

    Quote Message

I have wanted to direct Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange ever since I saw a version by the RSC in 1990... at that point, I had no idea that Burgess had composed his own music, led by the work of Beethoven.

    Quote Message

The juxtaposition between the glory of Beethoven’s composition, the inanity of Burgess lyrics and the shocking ultraviolence makes for a mix of cabaret, music hall and a visceral theatrical experience.

The production opens at the Everyman Theatre on 14 April.

At least 26 police forces in England and Wales have begun using new technology to extract data from phones.

And Privacy International said there had been no public debate about the rapid rollout of this practice.

But former Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said requiring a warrant in each instance was "just not practical".

"In lots of cases, officers need to be able to access what is on a mobile phone very very quickly and to be able to know whether they can arrest the offender to protect the public and to stop other crimes in action," he said.
