  8. Firefighters 'need more terror incident training'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 28 March 2018

The assistant general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called for more terrorist incident training for firefighters in the wake of the Kerslake Report's findings.

The report into the emergency response to the Manchester Arena attack on 22 May 2017 found poor communication meant chief fire officers were "risk-averse" and kept emergency trained responders away.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's chief apologised "unreservedly" for the failures.

    The FBU's Andy Dark said:

    Quote Message

It is appalling that the everyday firefighter is not trained or equipped to work with these specific incidents or deal with these specific type of injuries.

Referencing a training exercise GMFRS took part in at the Trafford Centre in the months before the attack, he said it was the "kind of event which we don’t attend very often - none of the emergency services do".

    He added:

    Quote Message

We need to have much more thorough testing, not just occasionally, not once a year or every couple of years.

    Quote Message

It needs to be regular tested - things that you don’t do very often but are risk critical have to be tested.

    Ruth Murrell

It follows yesterday's publication of the Kerslake Report, which criticised the delays in mental health provision for young people.

Ruth Murrell from Copster Green gave evidence in the review, after both she and her daughter Emily were seriously injured on the night of the attack and says it has been frustrating getting the right support for her family.

In a statement Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said it worked "hard to manage demand in the service" but accepted that "the family did have to wait for a considerable period before accessing services" which they apologised for.

  12. Nandy: PM must get a grip on child abuse claimspublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 28 March 2018
