    Norfolk is the top place in the country when it comes to archaeological finds and any cuts to the county's archaeological unit, external, which helps identify treasure, would be a "disaster" according to a former British Musem professor.

    The county council is having to find budget savings and is currently consulting on whether to cut £170,000 from its archaeology service, including the Portable Antiquities unit which identifies treasure items.

    The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released two pictures of Prince George's first day attending Westacre Montessori Nursery in Norfolk.

    The pictures show the toddler standing in front of a mural outside the nursery, which is close to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's home, Anmer Hall.

    RAF bomb disposal experts say the bombs and mortars unearthed at King's Lynn town hall earlier today were practise ordnance from World War Two.

    The site was cleared this morning when the bombs, mortars and some ammunition were uncovered by workmen carrying out a town hall renovation project. 

    Building work resumed after disposal experts removed the items.

  11. It's a TV flashback: Happisburgh Lighthouse 1998published at 16:30

    The red and white Happisburgh Lighthouse has towered over the Norfolk coast for 225 years.

    But as Shaun Peel reports, the red and white paint job has proved problematic.

    In the early '90s a television "makeover" didn't quite last the course, and decorators had to return some years later.

  13. Big bird 'on the loose' in Terrington St Clementpublished at 15:55

    A large bird that is native to South America has been on the loose in Terrington St Clement, police say.

    Officers received calls at around 11:00 to reports of a rhea, described as being similar in size to an ostrich, emerging from a children's playing field on the Station Road junction.

    Drivers later reported it being on the A17. Police say despite their investigations, they've not found the bird and can't be sure if it has returned to its home or been recaptured by its owner.

  14. Parliamentary review of NHS called by former health ministerpublished at 15:42

    The North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is calling for a Parliamentary review into what a future NHS will look like. 

    The announcement comes as a BBC investigation reveals a large number of GP practices in England are closing their doors to new patients because of staff shortages, and as junior doctors prepare to go on strike next week.

    Happisburgh Lighthouse, in north Norfolk, built after a huge loss of life during a storm in 1789, is 225 years old this week.

    It's now the only independently operated lighthouse in the country.

  18. Police search addresses following arrests on suspicion of firearms offencespublished at 14:20

    Police have searched properties on Unthank Road in Norwich and in Dickleburgh this morning after two people were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. 

    A man in his 60s and a teenage boy were arrested yesterday, questioned, and then released on bail until March. 

    An army bomb disposal unit was involved in the search yesterday. Three suspicious packages were found to be harmless.

  20. Local health provider reveals more than £1m of medicines wastedpublished at 13:30

    The Great Yarmouth and Waveney, external clinical commissioning group is urging people to only take the prescriptions they need after figures show more than £1m of unused medicines are wasted by the east of the county each year.

    Of the £1.06m worth of unused medicines the group estimates: 

    • £384k is being returned to pharmacies because it's not needed 
    • £320k is kept in the home and is out of date 
    • £170k is disposed of in care homes
