  1. Whale: No sightings from Walcottpublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2016

    I've been speaking to the coastguard team at Walcott, who say they are yet to spot a whale today.

    The whale was reported to be alive and thrashing about 300 to 400yds off the Mundesley shoreline.

    British Divers Marine Life Rescue, external, the Zoological Society of London and the local council have also been informed. 

  2. Whale: Latest sighting follows six sperm whale deaths on East Coastpublished at 11:59

    The sighting of a whale off Mundesley comes after six sperm whales beached and died along the East Coast over the past three weeks.

    The most recent was a bull whale which died after becoming stranded at Old Hunstanton last Thursday, (pictured) the 30th to die in the North Sea so far this year.  

  3. Whale: Coastguards keeping a watch on positionpublished at 11:41

    Coastguard Rescue Teams from Happisburgh and Mundesley are currently on the shoreline keeping an eye on the position of a whale, seen in shallow waters off Mundesley shortly after 10:00.

    British Divers Marine Life Rescue, the Zoological Society of London, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency's Receiver of Wreck, and the local council, have also been informed.

    UK Coastguard's Mike Puplett said: "We are advising people to keep at a safe distance from the whale, so we do not cause any further distress to it. We are doing all we can to assist the authorities and allow those with rescue experience to do their work.'

  4. Whale: 'Alive and thrashing' in shallow waterpublished at 11:36

    A whale has been reported in shallow water off the coast of Mundesley.

    A member of the Mundesley Coastguard Rescue Team contacted UK Coastguard shortly after 10:00, to report a whale 300-400 yards offshore.

    The whale was reported to be alive and thrashing in shallow water. It's the seventh whale to be seen off the East Coast in recent weeks.

    British Divers Marine Life Rescue have told us that species of the whale spotted off Mundesley is unknown.

    A spokesman said the animal was afloat in shallow water about 300-400m from the shore.

    We're getting reports of a whale sighting off the Norfolk coast.

    A coastguard team off Mundesley made a report to Humber Coastguard at about 10:10 this morning, saying that they believed they had seen a live whale in shallow water off Mundesley.

    A Humber Coastguard spokesman said it was unknown what kind of whale it was. He said coastguard teams from Happisburgh and Mundesley had been sent to gather more information, and that natural history organisations and the local council had been informed.

    We'll bring you more information as soon as we have it.

  8. Road reopens after sinkhole forces closurepublished at 09:55

    A Norwich road has now reopened after it closed last month because of a sinkhole.

    Plumstead Road, with barriers around the sinkhole, and a workman looking in

    Norwrich City Council began repair works last week to fill the hole on Plumstead Road.

    Contractors discovered a 6m-deep (19ft) cavern beneath the road surface. 

  9. Extra money for rural councilspublished at 09:39

    Norfolk County Council is to get an extra £7.7m over the next two years, as part of extra funding for councils announced by the government yesterday.

    Broadland District Council, external is the only authority in the county that won't be getting the extra funding. 

  10. Coastal defence planspublished at 09:08

    A decision on whether to extend coastal defences at Hopton, near Great Yarmouth, will be made this evening.

    Rock groynes near Hopton

    Potters Leisure Resort wants to build four granite groynes to defend its business from the sea. Two years ago, Bourne Leisure spent about £10m on rock groynes to protect its holiday village just to the north.

    If the scheme goes ahead, it will be the best-protected village along the Norfolk coast.

  11. City youngsters hammered at Old Traffordpublished at 08:50

    Norwich City's under-21s were beaten 7-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford last night.

    Will Keane scored five goals for United. A penalty from Andreas Pereira and a Timothy Fosu-Mensah strike completed the scoring.

    To put the result into context, Norwich City fielded a team with no league experience for the club at all while the United line-up included more than £40m worth of talent including Dutch international Memphis Depay and first team players Phil Jones, Adnan Januzaj and Paddy McNair. 

  12. Norfolk's councils get extra fundingpublished at 08:28

    The governmernt has announced it has found £10m extra money for Norfolk County Council and other authorities in the county.

    The county council will get £7.7m, the largest share, while other councils will get several hundred thousand pounds each. The extra money is available for the next two years.

    When the local government spending settlement was announced last year, there was an outcry from rural authorities who said the funding formula used by the government favoured urban authorities, not rural ones.
