    Norfolk farmer Tony Martin said he had lost faith in the criminal justice system following his arrest and conviction for fatally shooting an intruder at his farmhouse.

    At his trial at Norwich Crown Court, in April 2000, Mr Martin argued he had been acting in self-defence after finding two intruders inside his isolated property at Emneth Hungate. He was jailed for murder but his conviction was later reduced to manslaughter.

    In 2013 he said: "I haven't changed my views about what happened in 1999 but the whole experience has made me lose faith in the system."

    On the day of Norfolk farmer Tony Martin's arrest and the police search of his house, BBC Look East's Louise Hubball reported: "The village of Emneth Hungate was bustling with activity, in stark contrast to its remote and rural surroundings.

    "As sheep grazed in the fields opposite, police officers could be spotted along a secluded track. I saw four 4x4 police vehicles leave the scene, with a police dog van, a grey police car in Norfolk Constabulary livery and a van with three officers outside parked along the lane."

    Mr Martin has been told he faces no further action.

    The police operation to search Norfolk farmer Tony Martin's house at Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech, on 31 December involved about 15 police vehicles, a helicopter and armed officers, according to one eyewitness.

    The man, who asked not to be named, said: "It was as if the US president had come to visit."

    Mr Martin, who police have today revealed will face no further action, had been arrested at Wisbech on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm before the property was searched.

    Norfolk farmer Tony Martin, convicted of shooting dead a burglar in 1999, told the Press Association three years ago that he had once again confronted a burglar at his house at Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech.

    Mr Martin, of Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech, said he caught the would-be burglar while checking on an outbuilding. 

    He drove off when confronted and Mr Martin said he decided not to attempt to stop him, adding: "I couldn't face going through all that again."

    The prosecution of Tony Martin in 2000 provoked a national debate about the measures homeowners could take to defend their property.

    Mr Martin, of Emneth Hungate, Norfolk, was released in 2003 after serving two-thirds of a five-year sentence.

    He was found guilty of the murder of Fred Barras in 2000, but his conviction was reduced on appeal to manslaughter.

    Farmer Tony Martin, who has been told he faces no further action by police, was arrested on suspicion of illegal firearm possession in Wisbech on 31 December.

    In 1999 Mr Martin fatally shot 16-year-old intruder Fred Barras at his farmhouse in Emneth Hungate, Norfolk.

    He was jailed the following year for the shooting.

    A gun seized by police who searched Tony Martin's house at Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech, 31 on December was an air weapon.

    In a statement, Norfolk Constabulary said officers "acted on credible intelligence of illegal firearms at a property resulting in a man being arrested in Wisbech and taken into police custody, where he was questioned."

    Det Ch Insp Andy Coller said: "Public safety is paramount and Norfolk Constabulary takes all reports of firearms seriously.

    "Following the arrest a thorough search, under Section 18 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), was conducted and officers seized a firearm, which was believed to be an air weapon. However following further inquiries, it was deemed not to be a viable weapon due to its condition.”

    Norfolk Police has announced that a 71-year-old man - understood to be Tony Martin - who was arrested and bailed in connection with firearms offences after a planned police operation in Emneth Hungate in December, will face no further action.

    A chilly morning with some early frost or fog in places, but this will lift to leave a generally fine and dry day, with a maximum temperature of 6C (43F).

    Tonight it will be mostly dry with variable amounts of cloud, some clear spells and a minimum temperature of 1C (34F).
