    A caterpillar destroying many box plants and hedges may have come to the region through ports dealing with ships and cargoes from across the world, an expert says.

    The box tree caterpillar - the larva of a moth - is native to south-east Asia and feeds on plants commonly used in formal gardens for hedges and shrubbery. 

    Dr Ian Bedford from the John Innes Centre, Norwich, said: "Many exotic pests from overseas find Norfolk's climate and location attractive.

    "This caterpillar came in under the radar, probably through Harwich or Felixstowe,and because the moth can fly it spread very quickly. We are still trying to find out more about the insect," he said.

    A painkiller developed from a super-strength red chilli is being widely dispensed to patients at Cromer Hospital where clinicians have delivered their 100th dose.

    The active chilli ingredient, called Qutenza, is applied via a patch put in place for 60 minutes to stun nerve endings, giving up to three months of relief to help patients manage long-term chronic pain.

    Katherine Dyer, clinical nurse manager, said: "This type of treatment is only suitable for patients who are being cared for by a specialist pain consultant and it is an exciting development."

    School children from Great Yarmouth, aged from five to seven, have raised about £500 for Sport Relief, external with a sponsored fun run for a quarter of a mile along the beach.

    About 180 pupils from St George's Primary School took part in the run from the Sealife Centre to Britainnia Pier.

    Head teacher Melodie Fearns said the children braved the cold and the wind to raise the cash for the charity appeal.

    Residents in West Norfolk should pay a levy to a fund to protect beaches in the area, a coastal management company believes.

    Replenishing the shingle beach from Heacham to Snettisham would cost about £200,000 a year, Mike McDonnell from the East Wash Coastal Management Interest Company, external said. 

    This company has been set up to manage collection of funds from coastal caravan parks to boost contributions from the Environment Agency, external and Anglian Water, external. Mr McDonnell believes in future a wider community levy could be made but said next year's funding was already covered.

    A 73-year-old man has been jailed for 17 years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two girls in the 1980s.

    Clifford Pardon, of Buxton Road, North Walsham, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court by Judge Maureen Bacon QC after previously also being found guilty of 11 counts of indecent assault. 

    The offences involved two female victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, under the age of 14 at the time. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and banned from working with children for life.

    The Duchess of Cambridge, external was led to a silver handbag when she opened the 21st shop for charity East Anglia's Children's Hospices, external (EACH) in Holt today.

    Rebekah Hughes, an 11-year-old girl with Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, took the duchess straight to the counter where the silver Gant bag was on offer, telling her it was her favourite item in the shop.

    Rebekah's mother Annabel Hughes, 44, from Aylsham, said: "I'll have to buy her the handbag now or I won't hear the end of it."

    Rebekah Hughes, an 11-year-old who has the rare Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, took the Duchess of Cambridge on an impromptu tour of a new charity shop in Holt today.

    The duchess, royal patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH), opened its new shop. After asking what her favourite item was, Kate was led by the hand by Rebekah to a display of handbags and jewellery. 

    Rebekah explained that her favourite item was a silver Gant handbag, to which Kate replied: "We'd better put a reserved sticker on that."

    The Duchess of Cambridge, external greeted dozens of well-wishers, residents and visitors before officially opening a new East Anglia's Children's Hospice, externals (EACH) charity shop at Holt, Norfolk, this morning.

    The duchess is the charity's royal patron and cut a ribbon with the help of two families receiving care and support from EACH. Before going into the shop she met many people in the crowd and received a bouquet of spring flowers. 

    The branch is the 21st shop opened by EACH, which helps children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. It relies on voluntary donations and this year needs to raise £2.5m from its shops and a further £5m from fundraising.

    After playing LA Galaxy's youth side, some of the DESA players were asked to stay behind so the former England star could practise his coaching.
