East Anglian devolution: Plans for elected mayor viewed with 'extreme suspicion'published at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2016
Sir Henry Bellingham, the MP for North West Norfolk, external, says he views the idea of an East Anglian mayor with "extreme suspicion".
The position is part of the devolution deal for Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire unveiled in last week's budget. Its mayor would have more powers over transport and planning.
Speaking in the Commons last night, Sir Henry said he feared it could "undermine the institutions of Norfolk and the county council". He added: "It could be the death knell of Norfolk County Council."
