Norwich City's hopes of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship look to be over after a 2-1 defeat at Watford last night, who in turn have improved their chances of survival.

Danny Welbeck's winner puts Watford four points clear of the Premier League drop zone, but leaves the Canaries 10 points from safety with just 12 more available.

Their relegation will be confirmed on Saturday if they lose at home to West Ham in the 12:30 kick-off, although goal difference means a draw would also effectively confirm their drop back down to the second tier of English football.

Stephen Crocker said on behalf of the group that he was "hugely grateful" that the government has acknowledged the devastation coronavirus had caused the industry and it was a "very good first step".

"It's going to give us a period of reprieve," he said.

"Whilst I welcome this announcement, my call for a detailed reopening plan for venues still stands as this is an issue that is also critical for us in terms of longer-term planning."

The company said it remained concerned about people's confidence in returning to watch shows and would welcome the Prime Minister saying it was safe to do so with the right social distancing in place.

The group announced three-quarters of its staff faced job cuts and cancelled its Christmas panto last week.
