A new offshore support vessel has been named in Great Yarmouth today. The Esvagt Njord cost £40m to build and will work on the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm off Lincolnshire.

The ship has a telescopic gantry so crew can get from the ship to the turbines safely. Its bow is specially designed for sailing in the North Sea's variable weather and conditions and has accommodation for 40 engineers and technicians who work on the wind farm and 18 crew.

The vessel will be based in Great Yarmouth, docking every fortnight for contractor changeover. The crew changes over every four weeks.

This weekend it will be docked at its shore base and visitors can tour the vessel.

  2. Victim of teacher 'tried to bury the past'published at 13:40 British Summer Time 9 September 2016

A second victim of Gerard Singer said he had tried to bury the past after the abuse he suffered.

He had contemplated suicide and turned to drink and drugs. Earlier this year, he had a breakdown.

Judge Martyn Levett was told of a pre-sentence report, which said Singer was still in denial about his offences. It believed his behaviour was unlikely to change and there would be a high risk of harm to potential future victims.

The judge will return to court later.

Two victims of paedophile teacher Gerard Singer have told a judge about the impact his sexual abuse has had on their lives.

Singer, 69, was convicted in July of 27 offences against boys at the former St George's School, which was based first in Norfolk, then moved to Suffolk. He is being sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court today.

One of his victims told the court, through an impact statement, how he had been "preyed upon... my childhood destroyed."

He said he had become angry and wanted to apologise to family and friends for his behaviour.

"In the 1980s, chances were missed to help us. We were failed. I want the system to learn from those mistakes," he said.

  4. More on that 'self-releasing' squirrel...published at 12:26 British Summer Time 9 September 2016

I've been talking to a spokeswoman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service about the attempted squirrel rescue in Wymondham yesterday (not a sentence I thought I'd ever write).

She told me the information initially released by the fire service - that the squirrel was trapped in a tree - wasn't quite correct, and that it had been stuck on a telegraph pole instead.

The spokeswoman said a member of the public had phoned in after seeing the squirrel in distress, and a nearby fire officer was called. But as we know, the squirrel had "self-released" from its predicament before the officer got there.

Plans to cut fertility services in Great Yarmouth and Waveney to save £70,000 a year are being challenged by one of the leading providers of IVF treatments in the eastern counties.

Currently three cycles of IVF are offered to people who have been unable to conceive in east Norfolk and north Suffolk but the health authority is consulting on reducing that to two to save money.

Dr Thomas Mathew, UK medical director for Bourn Hall Clinic, which provides IVF treatment, is challenging the decision to cut services.

"After three cycles of IVF we have seen high 80% success rates. Any cuts would lower the probability of conception, he said.

"This is not a lifestyle choice but a basic innate desire for couples to have a baby."

He said frustrating this desire could lead to psychological and mental problems.

  10. Trapped squirrel 'self-releases' from tree after fire service call-outpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 9 September 2016

    Jodie Smith
    BBC News

We've all heard about firefighters getting called out to rescue cats from trees, but yesterday a squirrel in Wymondham took things to a whole new level.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said an officer was "mobilised" to a tree in the town after reports a squirrel was trapped there.

However, when the officer got there, they found the squirrel had "self-released" (their words, not mine) and their services were not needed.

As you might imagine, there are some very tongue-in-cheek comments on Twitter about the failed rescue, including one from a user who wrote: "I'm sure the squirrel is embarrassed enough as it is".

The judge at his trial said there was overwhelming evidence Singer had an entrenched pattern of sexual misconduct towards young boys, which had been in existence for more for 40 years.

The city council wants to limit Houses of Multiple Occupation to 30% of properties in popular areas like the Golden Triangle around Earlham Road and Unthank Road on the west side of the city. Councillors believe shared properties drive up house prices for other potential residents.

Students at the University of East Anglia oppose the plans and an online petition has already gained 750 signatures. Gavin Dick from the National Landlords Association said the plan could lead to licensing which could also drive up rents.
