    Fifteen people, including a baby and two children, have been found in the back of a lorry near North Walsham, police say.

    The discovery was made yesterday afternoon at a food processing factory at Worstead.

    The vehicle had come from Spain and was delivering potatoes to the Albert Bartlett factory.

    Police say the group were assessed by the ambulance service and one man was treated for an arm injury.

    They are are now in the care of the Home Office. 

    No-one from Albert Bartlett has so far been available for comment..

    Wroxham, external have signed former striker Jordan Attree. 

    The frontman returns after a short spell with Thetford Town where he scored four goals in seven games. 

    Attree could play in tonight's Ryman North game against Brentwood at Trafford Park. 

    Elsewhere, in the second round of the Thurlow Nunn League Cup, Thetford Town are at Mildenhall Town, Downham Town travel to Ely City while Diss Town go to Stowmarket Town. 

    And in the First Division Knockout Cup, King's Lynn Town Reserves host March Town United.

  7. Police take action against city beggars after complaintspublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Police say they've charged 17 people for begging offences in Norwich city centre.

    The action follows complaints from members of the public and business owners.

    Norfolk Police, external says over the last four weeks officers have spoken to people on 150 occasions in relation to begging.

    In future a formal warning will be issued to those found begging while persistent offenders will be arrested and face being summonsed to court where they will receive a fine.    

    Norfolk Police says it found the majority of people begging were not homeless and had access to accommodation. Many were also in receipt of benefits.

    Ch Insp Nick Paling added: “Beggars can earn anything between £50 and £150 on the streets but what many people do not realise is that this money is spent to fund their addictions to alcohol and drugs."

    Shoppers are being urged to donate to one of the city's charities rather than giving money to beggars.

    Returning now to our story about the Norwich man who's won £1m on the Premium Bonds.

    Jill Waters, retail director of NS&I (National Savings and Investments), said: "We are delighted to bring good news to a man in Norwich, the first time we have delivered the £1m jackpot to the city. 

    "With over two million prizes given out each month, we hope there are many more Premium Bond holders in Norwich and Norfolk that will be celebrating tax-free wins."

    If you're a Premium Bond holder here in the county, I should think you're hoping exactly the same thing.

  9. Man jailed for 24 years for child sex abusepublished at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    A man who sexually abused children between 2011 and 2016, has been jailed for 24 years. 

    Craig McCabe, 37, of Albany Road, Great Yarmouth, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court, having previously admitted 11 offences in the county, including nine counts of rape and two of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

    Det Sgt Stacey Murray said: "This was a horrendous case and the sentence imposed demonstrates this. I hope it provides some closure to the victims. 

    "We hope such a result will help to reassure victims that we will always investigate any allegations of sexual abuse thoroughly and as a consequence bring offenders to justice."

    More on that serious assault in Great Yarmouth, which resulted in three men being arrested by police.

    Police have confirmed a woman was stabbed in the neck and taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

    Police were called to Dickens Court just before 12:00.

    Two other people are also being treated in hospital and these two individuals have been arrested. A third, uninjured person, was also arrested.

    The cordon around the block of flats has been lifted and roads reopened.

    A wooded area in Thetford has been sealed off after reports of a sexual assault against a woman.

    Police say the attack happened at about 20:40 last night between Beech Close and Pine Close.

    They want to hear from anyone who was near the area last night and saw anything suspicious.

    Yesterday saw the birth of the first grey seal pup at England’s largest colony, on Blakeney Point on the North Norfolk coast.

    It heralds the start of breeding at Blakeney, which should see upwards of 2,500 pups being born on this remote spit. 

    “We’ve been looking forward for the pups for a few months now and it’s so exciting that they’re finally here," said the National Trust's Sabrina Fenn, seal ranger at Blakeney National Nature Reserve, external.

    The pups are fed on their mothers' milk for three weeks before heading into the sea for the first time. 

    Bull seals fight for territories with mating taking place soon after pupping, making it quite a dramatic place to be.

  13. Three arrests at scene of Great Yarmouth serious assaultpublished at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Norfolk Police has confirmed three people have been arrested at the scene of a serious assault at Dickens Court, Great Yarmouth.

  14. Man charged over Harleston stabbingpublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Staying with crime, a man has been charged following a stabbing in Harleston over the weekend. 

    A 19-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach in the early hours of Saturday morning after a fight broke out in The Thoroughfare. He was taken to hospital where he needed surgery. 

    A 43-year-old man from Lowestoft has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife.

    He's due to appear at Norwich Crown Court on 28 November.  

  15. Further bail for man arrested in connection with Bungay hit-and-runpublished at 13:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Police say a 49-year-old man who answered bail yesterday in connection with a fatal collision in Bungay in May, has been rebailed until 6 February.

    The victim, Shane Lay, of Broome, was walking his dog in Bridge Street on Friday, 13 May when he was hit by a Nissan Qashqai. He died the following day in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

  16. Police attend serious assault in Great Yarmouthpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    Norfolk Police says officers are currently on scene after a serious assault in Great Yarmouth.

    They were called to Dickens Court at 11:53 following reports of a serious assault involving a number of people. 

    At least one person has suffered a serious injury and an air ambulance have been called to the scene

    A cordon has been put around Dickens Court with road closures in place at Dickens Avenue and Admiralty Road whilst officers investigate the full circumstances.

    He's remaining tight-lipped about what he will be doing with the dosh, preferring to remain anonymous.

    In case you're unfamiliar with the Bonds here's a few facts about them:

    • They were launched 60 years ago today as a national savings scheme
    • There are £54m in unclaimed prizes
    • In total, 21 million people hold over £63bn in bonds
    • There are currently two top monthly prizes of £1m
    • On average holders can expect to earn a return of 1.25%, tax-free
    • The random number-picker (pictured) known as ERNIE, was invented by Bletchley Park codebreakers in 1956

    A man from Norfolk has won £1m on the Premium Bonds.

    He's opted for no publicity so all we know about him is that he's from Norwich and invested £25,100 in bonds.  

    The National Savings scheme has made 350 people millionaires since 1956 but it's the first time the city has celebrated a major jackpot win.

    The lucky man bought the bond in 2012.

  19. Educational attainment at risk for two out of three nursery children in Norfolk, warns charitypublished at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    As well as a shortage of people willing to work as carers, Norfolk also has a shortage of qualified nursery teachers, according to a charity.

    The report by Save the Children, external has placed Norfolk among the worst 20% of local authorities, finding that 65% of children at independent nurseries in the county don't have a qualified early years teacher.    

    The charity claims these children are at greater risk of falling behind by the time they reach school and staying behind throughout their lives because of England's chronic shortage of nursery teachers.
