  1. Hospital 'makes improvements', says health watchdogpublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    Safety standards at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston have improved, according to a health watchdog.

    The Care Quality Commission had previously said maternity and surgery units, plus care of young people, were unsafe and required improved.

    But inspectors found that these areas have improved when they returned to the hospital on 16 and 17 August.

    In the report, external published today, they said staff now learn from incidents and report any concerns. 

    A new children's outpatients unit has been opened and 18 new midwives have been taken on. However, they still said that there were not enough staff.  

    The overall rating of the hospital is "good".

    A town in south Norfolk has seen the biggest jump in property values nationally over the year, according to figures.

    Zoopla said homes in Diss have increased in value by 16.2% since January, taking the average house price to £305,896.

    East Anglia was the region with the greatest property price growth, the website said.

    It said house prices in the east had increased by 11.56% and the average home now costs £358,401.

    Lawrence Hall, a spokesman for Zoopla, said: "This year has certainly been a historic year, with the events of the past six months giving rise to potential political uncertainty. 

    "However, the property market - it seems - remains resilient and property values across Britain have continued to grow."

    A popular model village has been put up for sale for £500,000.

    The owners of Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth, Peter Williamson, 53, and Shirley Whelan, are retiring after running it since 2004. 

    They said they will be sad to wave goodbye, but it was "it was time to step back". 

    Mr Williamson said: "We have had a fantastic year with a record number of visitors - 3,100 on one day alone."

    The model village first opened in the early 1960s.

  6. Car catches fire on Acle straightpublished at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    The Acle straight was closed for an hour on Monday evening after a car caught fire.

    The vehicle was on fire in a lay by on the A47, near to the Acle roundabout, on the Norwich-bound carriageway.

    Emergency services were called to the scene at about 19:20.

    No one was injured.

    'Tis the season to be jolly... and loving gifts will be scattered across Norfolk this week bringing smiles to the faces of strangers. 

    The little acts of kindness are the brainchild of Trish Abbott (pictured below with husband Phil), who launched the Facebook group Random Gifts Across the World, external from her Reedham home three years ago.

    This week she will be leaving her creations, of painted stones and decorated wood, in a variety of surprising places, including trees, coffee shops, and restaurants.

    Mrs Abbott, 62, says there's "so much horrid news around at the moment, that it's lovely to make people smile".

    The site now has more than 1,600 members across the world, including Australia, the United States and Brazil, as well as across the UK and Europe.

    A family whose home in west Norfolk was badly damaged by fire at the weekend say they're overwhelmed by the help they have been given by local people.

    Sarah Harrington and her two children Rebecca and Sam had to get out of the Terrington St Clement house in their nightclothes when the blaze broke out between 23:00 and midnight on Saturday. 

    Her brother James Wood, who was staying there, also got out, but had to go to hospital after breathing in smoke.

    Sarah says they've lost "pretty much everything", but neighbours have rallied round, donating bags of clothes, and toys and presents for the children.

    The fire came only days after their mother, who was the tenant of the housing association home, had died unexpectedly. 

    James Wood has now been found a flat by Freebridge Community Housing. Sarah is hoping they will be able to help her find a home as well.

    Visitors are being urged to stay away from the James Paget University Hospital, external if they have symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea.

    Several wards are affected by an outbreak of Norovirus, known as the "winter vomiting bug".

    The hospital in Gorleston advises anyone with symptoms to contact the Infection Control Team if their visit to the hospital is unavoidable.

    Dozens of people flocked to Aylsham this morning to bag a bird for their Christmas dinner.

    The annual poultry auction has been held at Keys, external for 63 years, and is popular with farmers and producers alike. Unlike your supermarket product, buyers have to remove feet, head and gut their bird.

    Keys director Kevin Lines says the sale marks the start of the festive season as far as they're concerned.
